WEST PALM BEACH — A retired Palm Beach County deputy facing a first-degree murder charge will be held without bail, a judge ruled Wednesday morning.

Authorities say Carlton Nebergall Jr. fatally shot his son-in-law Jacob Lodge late Sunday in The Acreage. He appeared before Judge Dina Keever Agrama at a brief hearing at the Palm Beach County Jail.

Nebergall, shackled by leg and arm restraints and dressed in a jail jumpsuit, brushed away tears as he received instructions from Keever Agrama. About a dozen family members and friends showed up in support of Nebergall, but declined comment as they walked out of the hearing.

Keever Agrama ordered Nebergall not to have any contact with his daughter, his grandchildren or Lodge’s family, and said he cannot return to his home if he ever makes bond. Nebergall lives with his daughter and grandchildren, accord- ing to a police report.

Michael Salnick, Nebergall’s attorney, said after the hearing that it would be “inappropriate” to discuss the facts of the case.

Nebergall, 61, worked at the Lantana Police Department from 1981 to 1985 and at the sheriff ’s office until his retirement in 2012, according Florida Department of Law Enforcement records.

Lodge was killed after he went to the home that his estranged wife, Katrina Nebergall, shares with her father to exchange their children’s clothes. Katrina Nebergall filed for divorce from Lodge in January.

Keever Agrama presided over Wednesday’s bond appearance after Judge Ted Booras recused himself from the case Monday because he had known Nebergall “for too many years.”

Nebergall’s son, Deputy Jason Nebergall, was arrested in December 2016 after he was accused of sexually battering a woman he was sent to help on a domestic call. The younger Nebergall remains on unpaid leave as his case remains open.
