SPOTLIGHT ROUNDS

- — Brian Biggane

TOMMY FLEETWOOD, 69-274

In or around the lead for most of the day, Fleetwood’s undoing came with bogeys at Nos. 14 and 15. He three-putted the first of the two, missing his par putt from 6 feet, then was unable to get up-and-down from the bunker on 15. Fleetwood had eagled No. 18 Saturday and had a chance to tie for the lead if he could duplicate the feat. Instead his second shot found the bunker, and while he got up-and-down from there, the birdie wasn’t enough. He finished fourth, two shots out of the playoff.

WEBB SIMPSON, 72-276

One shot off the lead when the day began, the 2012 U.S. Open champion had a birdie at No. 7 and eight pars on the rest of the front nine to hold a share of the lead at 7-under.

But Simpson, who hasn’t won since 2014, faded on the back nine with bogeys at Nos. 11, 12 and 14 to finish 2 over for the day. His tie for fifth marked his second top-five finish of the year. Simpson finished second in strokes gained putting and third in scrambling for the week.

RORY MCILROY, 72-289

On his way to his first subpar round of the week, the 2012 Honda Classic champion hit his tee shot in the water at No. 17, went to the drop area and got wet again, and ultimately settled for a quadruple-bogey 7. McIlroy then sent word through his agent he wouldn’t talk to the media afterward. His coach is reportedly flying in today to join him for a round at Seminole. He has six weeks until the Masters, where he will attempt to become only the sixth player to complete the career grand slam.
