FORMER DREYFOOS STUDENT BRINGING BALLET FLORIDA BACK
A Dreyfoos School of the Arts alumna has re-established Ballet Florida, with a program called “Reawakening” scheduled for March 24 at the Kravis Center.
Lauren Carey, 28, of West Palm Beach, an alumnus of both Ballet Florida and Dreyfoos School of the Arts, is the president and artistic director of the newly resurrected local dance company, according to spokeswoman Margaret Yansura. Joining Carey is Guy Palmer as creative director and her sister Lyndsey Carey, as director of outreach.
Carey went from Dreyfoos to The Juilliard School’s Dance Division, for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2011, followed by New York University’s Steinhardt’s School, for a Master of Arts Degree in 2013.
Ballet Florida was founded in 1985 and closed in 2009 after 23 seasons of performances in West Palm Beach, New York and Europe.
“Reawakening is set for 8 p.m. at Kravis’ Persson Hall. Tickets are available online at www.kravis.org for $45, or $25 for students with a valid student ID.
“We’ve developed a wellrounded contemporary ballet company presenting new works together with timeless classics created and performed by both local and international artists,” Carey said. “Our team has developed a ballet company, school, and community outreach program with a deep appreciation of what Ballet Florida previously was and what it offered the community for many years.”
