Valiente wins second straight 26-goal event

Butler Handicap Subsidiary goes to Daily Racing Form.

Va lien te WELLINGTON — won its second consecutiv­e 26- goal tournament Sunday in the Butler Handicap at Internatio­nal Polo Club Palm Beach.

And, for the second consecutiv­e week, it was a family afair with Valiente defeating Colorado 11-8 to win the fourteam high goal tournament. Last week Valiente won the C.V. Whitney Cup with a 9-4 victory over Colorado.

The game pitted father and son and teams in the same polo organizati­on against each other but with different interchang­eable lineups and unlimited horsepower.

This week’ s Va lien te team featured Bob Jornayvaz, Tommy Beresford and 10-goalers Facundo Pieres

and Adolfo Cambiaso. Last week’s winning Valiente team was his son Rob Jornayvaz, Beresford, Pieres and Cambiaso.

This week’s runner-up Colorado team was Rob Jornayvaz, Juan Britos, Magoo Laprida and Diego Cavanagh. Last week’s Colorado team was Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Magoo Laprida and

Diego Cavanagh. Cambiaso, the top-ranked player in the world, was named Most Valuable Player. Tanita, played by Cambiaso and owned by J5 Equestrian, was Best Playing Pony.

Pie res scored a gamehigh six goals and Cambiaso added fififififi­five goals. Laprida led Colorado with four goals, Cavanagh had two and Britos added one. The team also received one goal on handicap as a 25-goal rated team.

At least this week’s game was more competitiv­e. Colorado held Valiente scoreless in the third chukker for a 6-4 halftime lead. Then Pieres got hot, scoring fifive unanswered goals for a 9-6 lead with 4:10 left in the fififth chukker. Cavanagh, hit hard with a mallet in the fififth chukker, tried to rally his team but ran out of time.

Valiente converted 10 of 14 shots from the fifield and Colorado was 6 of 10. Both teams were 1 for 1 in penalty conversion­s. Colorado led in fouls, 5-3, and throwins won, 10-9.

In the Butler Han dicap Subsidiary, Daily Racing Form defeated Grand

Champions Polo Club, 16- 10. Jared Zenni was named Most Valuable Player. LaVina Candileja, ridden and owned by 10-goaler Hilario Ulloa, was Best Playing Pony.

Daily Racing form got balanced scoring. Agustin Obregon led with fififififi­five goals, Zenni had four and Ulloa and Nino Obregon each had three. Alejandro Novillo Astrada led Grand Champions with fifive goals, including two on penalty conversion­s.

Daily Racing Form converted 13 of 19 shots from the field and 3 of 3 at the penalty line. Grand Champions was 4 of 7 from the

fifield and 3 of 5 in penalty conversion­s. Daily Racing Form led in fouls, 11-6, and throw-ins won, 13-10.

Defending champion Travieso will be joined by Audi, Tonkawa and Valiente in

Tuesday’s semififina­ls of the prestigiou­s 20-goal Sterling Cup. Audi advanced with a 13-5 rout of Dutta Corp. Nic Roldan scored a game-high six goals and was named Most Valuable Player in the featured game. Ecuador-based Travieso advanced with a 10-8 win over Flexjet

and Tonkawa defeated U.S. Polo Assn., 16-12, to remain the tournament’ s only undefeated team. Valiente advanced with a 2-1 record despite losing its last bracket game to SD Farm, 10-9.

Carlucho Arellano scored the winning goal in overtime to give Beverly Equestrian a 10-9 victory over Wildcat Sunday to advance into the semifinals of the $ 50,000 National 12-Goal Tournament. It is the only 12-goal tournament in the nation to offfffffff­fffer prize money. Beverly Equestrian will play the winners of today’s GSA-Team USPA game.

Defending champion Travieso will be joined by Audi, Tonkawa and Valiente in Tuesday’s semifinals of the prestigiou­s 20-goal Sterling Cup. Tonkawa is the tournament’s only undefeated team.
