Put a trained cop on every campus

-

Over the past decade and more, we have heard and watched the news reporting how our young adults and children have become the easy targets at schools. Protecting our children should be our main priority. Unfortunately, I believe, no matter what actions we take, it will not stop the mentally ill or the religious fanatic.

Do we put our children in schools with one door and no windows? Do we put an armed guard at each entrance? Do we arm teachers?

I realize the name Peterson will be remembered for a very long time as the deputy sheriff who failed to act and told others to stay back as shots could be heard, while our young adults were being slaughtered. His actions could be the result of bad training, lack of dedication or just cowardice. But the fact is he is not a good representative of the many police officers who put their lives on the line to protect others every day.

Why not hire retired police officers? They are trained in disarming suspects, protection and retention of weapons, escalating and de-escalating high-liability situations. Local law enforcement agencies can assist by helping these officers with their state certifications as well as firearms qualifications.

Part time or full time, I believe there are more than enough retired officers to help protect our children. School police officers are one way of putting officers on school campuses. Let’s not overlook a source that is immediately available.
