Russian Kasatkina rolls into semifinals

Daria Kasatkina routed for- mer world No. 1 Angelique Kerber 6-0, 6-2 to reach the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif.

The 20-year-old Russian needed just 58 minutes on Thursday to brush aside the German. Kasatkina hasn’t dropped a set in four matches at Indian Wells, knocking out U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens and world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki.

Kasatkina will play either No. 8 seed Venus Williams or No. 27 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the semis.

In the men’s quarterfin­als late Thursday, Roger Federer met Chung Hyeon of South Korea in a rematch of their Australian Open semifinal.

College basketball:

Ole Miss announced that Middle Tennessee’s Kermit Davis will be its next coach and be introduced on campus Monday. Davis, 58, will continue to lead Middle Tennessee during the NIT. The Blue Raiders’ second-round game is Sunday at Louisville.

■ Leron Black, the leading scorer for Illinois last season, will not return for his final year of eligibilit­y.

Augie Garrido, whose ability to motivate and innovate produced five College World Series titles with two schools and the most wins of any coach in college baseball history, died Thursday at 79. Garrido had been hospitaliz­ed in California following a stroke on Sunday. The University of Texas, where Garrido wrapped up his career in 2016, announced his death.

Five-time world champion Vinny Paz, 55, pleaded no contest in Rhode Island to assaulting his girlfriend and received a oneyear suspended sentence and one year of probation. After he was sentenced, Paz proclaimed his innocence.
