Jaguars release TE Lewis in cap move

-

The Jaguars dumped their longest-tenured player, and he wasn’t happy. Tight end Marcedes Lewis is released after 12 seasons, in a move to save $3.5 million in salary-cap space. The move came the same day Jacksonville parted with receiver Allen Hurns to save $7 million. Both players are now free agents.

Hurns’ future had been in doubt since Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole emerged as big-play receivers last season. Hurns really became expendable when the Jaguars signed two receivers last week, Marqise Lee and Donte Moncrief. Lewis thought his spot was safe, even after Jacksonville signed Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Niles Paul last week.

Lewis told The Associated Press he felt “disrespected” by the timing of the move, a week after free agency began. The 33-year-old, a first-round draft pick in 2006, played 170 games with Jacksonville. His 375 receptions and 4,502 yards receiving rank third in team history. His 33 receiving touchdowns are second-most in franchise history, trailing Jimmy Smith (67).

Bears: Matched the Packers’ offer sheet for cornerback Kyle Fuller and signed him to a four-year contract.

Panthers: Wide receiver Jarius Wright signed a threeyear contract. He spent all six of his NFL seasons with the Vikings prior to being released last week.

Steelers: Free agent safety Morgan Burnett signed a three-year deal. He has played all eight seasons of his NFL career in Green Bay.

Colts: Signed free agent receiver Ryan Grant, who spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Redskins. Last year, Grant had 45 receptions, 573 yards and four TDs.

Cowboys: The Raiders traded fullback Jamize Olawale to Dallas in a deal that also includes a swap of picks in the upcoming draft. Dallas sent Oakland one of its two fifth-round picks in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

Former player: Prosecutors say former Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin has pleaded not guilty to threatening former teammates who had harassed him in the NFL. Martin appeared in court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to charges of making criminal threats and carrying a loaded firearm. A menacing post from his Instagram page last month showed a shotgun and referred by name to the prep school he attended in Los Angeles. It also mentioned the Instagram names of two former Dolphins teammates who harassed him, Richie Incognito and Mike Pouncey. Martin left the Dolphins midseason in 2013 after accusing teammates of bullying.
