‘Down by the Sea’ gala celebrates roots of Opportunity

OPPORTUNITY EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION & FAMILY CENTER

-

The old tongue twister, “She sells seashells by the seashore,” could have been about the history of Opportunity Early Childhood Education & Family Center. Palm Beach’s oldest children’s charity was founded in 1939 to help women who were creating and selling shell crafts to support their families. With Opportunity’s help, the women sold a lot of seashells by the seashore and at a store on Worth Avenue too.

This season, Opportunity returns to its roots with the seaside, shell-themed gala “Down by the Sea”. Guests will dine and dance at a private home on Palm Beach. Proceeds benefit programs for under-resourced children and their families.

“We love the idea of mixing Opportunity’s history, providing a spectacular setting, and supporting children in need,” said gala co-chair KC Halpern. “It’s the quintessential Palm Beach party.”

This is the second year the charity has taken the fundraiser outdoors and the second year the gala will take place at a home on North Ocean Boulevard. The committee decided that using a private home reduced overhead costs and increased proceeds for the nonprofit. Last year’s “Gala in the Garden” was sold out, making the 2018 event a sought-after ticket.

Guests will gaze at sweeping views of the Atlantic as they sway to the rhythmic sounds of a steel drum band. Shell centerpieces and twinkling lights under a cleartopped tent will complete the scene of Old Florida elegance. Tickets are available at opportunitypbc.org
