France, Spain join U.S., Croatia in semis

Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison put the United States in the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time since 2012 by beating Belgium’s Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 5-7, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3), 6-4 late Saturday to finish an American sweep in Nashville, Tenn. The U.S. will play Croatia, which beat Kazakhstan, in the semifinals Sept. 14-16. John Isner and Sam Querrey set up the U.S. doubles match for the clincher by winning singles matches. Elsewhere, defending champ France advanced by beating Italy, and Spain advanced by defeating Germany.

■ Kiki Bertens of the Netherland­s overpowere­d German Julia Goerges for a 6-2, 6-1 win and the title at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, S.C.

Horse racing: The Bob Baffert-trained Justify vaulted into the role of probable Kentucky Derby favorite Saturday with a three-length victory over Bolt d’Oro in the $1 million Santa Anita (Calif.) Derby; Good Magic strengthen­ed his Derby credential­s with a victory in the $1 million Blue Grass at Keeneland, winning by 1½ lengths; and Vino Rosso survived a stewards’ inquiry to win the $1 million Wood Memorial.

College basketball: Gary Trent Jr. is leaving Duke after one year for the NBA draft. His 97 3-pointers were a program record for freshmen.

College hockey: Minnesota Duluth (25-16-3) beat Notre Dame 2-1 Saturday at St. Paul, Minn., for the school’s second NCAA hockey championsh­ip. Cale Morris made 33 saves for Notre Dame (28-10-2).
