Rizzo among several players going on DL

-

The Cubs took the cautious route Monday by placing first baseman Anthony Rizzo on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to April 6. The move will allow Rizzo ample time to be ready for an NL Central showdown against the Cardinals starting April 16. Rizzo has been nagged by back discomfort since April 2 and tried to play through it until his back tightened up Friday. The three-time NL All-Star, is hitting .107 (3 for 28) this season.

Angels: Starting pitcher JC Ramirez will miss the rest of this season because of a torn ulnar collateral ligament, and Tommy John surgery has been recommended for the right-hander. Ramirez (0-2, 9.45 ERA) was put on the 10-day disabled list a day after the 29-year-old felt tightness in his forearm in his second start this season.

Red Sox: Shortstop Xander Bogaerts was put on the 10-day disabled list because of a cracked bone in his left ankle. Boston said it will recall infielder Tzu-Wei Lin from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Cardinals: Greg Holland is set for a new job as the team’s closer. The Cardinals recalled him from the minors in time for Monday’s game against Milwaukee, and the All-Star righty said he was ready to pitch. The 32-yearold tied for the NL lead with 41 saves for Colorado last season, then signed as a free agent with St. Louis on opening day. He pitched two games for Single-A Palm Beach. To make room, St. Louis optioned RHP Mike Mayers to Triple-A Memphis.

Orioles: Recalled 2013 first-round pick Hunter Harvey from Double-A Bowie to bolster the bullpen. He replaces lefty Tanner Scott, who was optioned to TripleA Norfolk.

Mariners: Placed first baseman Ryon Healy on the disabled list with an ankle injury and recalled righthander Chasen Bradford from Triple-A Tacoma.

Rays: Placed 2B Brad Miller on the 10-day DL because of a strained left groin and selected RHP Ryan Weber’s contract from Triple-A Durham.

Cubs: The Cubs tried to play their home opener Monday, but the game vs. Pittsburgh was postponed a day because of snow that covered much of Wrigley Field. The majors’ 11th postponement this season added another picture to a growing montage of snowballs, ski caps and puffy coats from ballparks across the Midwest. Chicago is the last MLB team to hold a home opener.
