DOLPHINS’ DAVIS LOOKS FOR FIT ON REBUILT LINE

Jesse Davis of

AVENTURA — the Miami Dolphins was quite solid when thrust into the lineup at guard or tackle last season, heavily exceed

ing expectations.

But Davis has higher expectations for himself. In fact, on Friday, he was blunt about his 2017 performance.

“Overall, I’d say not very good, but I guess you can say I held my own,” Davis said, speaking before the Dolphins Cancer Challenge Celebrity Golf Tournament. “It was my first season, played multiple positions. It was fun, I know that. It was kind of stressful at times, but it also was just kind of fun to be in that situation where you can feel

like you’re going to sink, but you start treading water, get to it.”

Because the Dolphins added former Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton to play the left side, and Ja’Wuan James was brought back on a fifth-year option, it has been widely assumed Davis will compete with Ted Larsen for the starting right guard spot.

But Davis said he still isn’t sure what his role will be.

“Oh, they still haven’t really told me,” Davis said, when asked how he found out he’d be playing guard this season. “Either one would be just fine for me, whatever

helps the team out best. Obviously, with the moves that have already happened, I can kind of assume that I’m going to be around right guard or left guard. It depends on the situation.”

Davis has more upside

than Larsen, so he will be installed as the favorite as organized team activities begin Monday in Davie. Davis said he’s just ready to com-

pete.

“I love it,” Davis said. “Ted is a good friend of mine. It’ll be fun to get out there. It’ll be pretty fun just to get that compet i tion back goi ng again, especially with Ted, and, who knows, maybe with Sitton, too. We’ll see what happens.”

McCain, Am e ndola pledge truce: It’s a plot straight out of Vince McMa- hon’s resurrected XFL: Bobby McCain and Danny Amendola go after each

other during a game, with the result being an ejection

and a $9,000 fine for McCain. Then, a few months later, McCain and Amendola find themselves as tag-team partners of sorts when Amen

dola joins the Dolphins as a free agent.

So, when McCain met with

the media Friday during the annual Dolphins Cancer Challenge golf tournament at Turnberry Isle, naturally a question came up — delivered with a smirk — on whether he had met Amen-

dola with perhaps cooler heads prevailing.

“I have, I have,” said McCain, who was ejected for throwing a punch even though replays showed it was more of a forearm. “Me and Danny, we chalked it up.” (Smirk.)

“We chalked it up.” (More of a smirk.)

“Yeah, we chalked it up.” That’s McCain’s way of saying they’re giving peace a chance.

“We’re teammates, man,” McCain said. “We’ve got one goal in mind, that’s a champi

onship. We’re happy to have him on Sundays — Sunday, Monday, Thursday, whatever day it is, we’re happy to have him on our sideline.

We’re going to compete.”
