Noteworthy News — YMCA of the Palm Beaches’ Hangar Party. Alex Sorgente poses with local skateborders
More than 150 guests attended the YMCA of the Palm Beaches’ Hangar Party to announce an ambitious new development project that will bring an Olympicclass skate park to Palm Beach County. The event was hosted in a private hangar, adjacent to the Palm Beach County International Airport, by Jet Access Aviation and Signature Flight Support.
Guests enjoyed demonstrations by a number of young up-andcoming skateboarders from the area, plus a visit from Alex Sorgente, a recent Gold Medal winner of the X Games, Vans Park Series World Championship winner, and potential participant in the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics to be held in Japan. Lake Worth resident Sorgente started his skateboarding career at the YMCA of the Palm Beaches, and has gone on to win numerous national and international titles.
The event was underwritten by a local family foundation, with additional support provided by E.R. Bradley’s, Sushi Jo, and Corks and Forks Catering.
Attendees were also treated to a presentation by Tim Payne, Skateboarding Hall of Fame inductee, and the nation’s leading designer of world-class skate parks, who has been enlisted to develop the Y’s park. The skate park will be coupled with a progressive teen outreach center, which is at the core of the Y’s commitment to youth development.
“What an incredible evening,” said Tim Leuliette, Chairman, YMCA of the Palm Beaches Board of Directors. “Our hope is this project will not only serve as a training facility for future Olympians, but also give the kids in our community a worldclass facility to hone their skateboarding skills.”
The event served as the fundraising kickoff for the skate park and teen center, and several naming opportunities were announced.
