Michigan AD: No Patterson ruling

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said he still isn’t sure when the NCAA is going to rule on the eligibility of junior quarterback transfer Shea Patterson. The potential for changes in the transfer rule could be part of that decision delay.

Manuel said he doesn’t know exactly how the possible rule changes are affecting the decision-making process regarding Patterson.

“We’re in the middle of working through a bunch of transfer potential rules and regulation changes, and how that will affect this, how they’re thinking about it, how will that impact this analysis of this waiver I don’t know,” he said. “My understanding is that they’re going off the current rule and they’re trying to understand all of the facts around this particular case as they do with any individual case.”

The NCAA Division I Committee on Academics has recommended various changes to the transfer rule. Players transferring now must sit out one year upon switching schools unless they have earned their undergrad degree. Patterson transferred from Mississippi after the NCAA imposed sanctions against the Rebels for recruiting violations. He has two years of eligibility remaining. Patterson is seeking a waiver to the transfer rule to be eligible immediately at Michigan.

“It’s a process. We continue to work on it as we need to and monitor where it is and then respond, if we need to respond, to additional conversations of things the NCAA has,” Manuel said. “Sometimes these things take longer than others, and we’re doing the work we need to do.

“It’s with the NCAA.”
