Third time’s a charmer for the royal family

LONDON — Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to a boy on Monday morning, touching off widespread jubilation — and a few yawns — across Britain. Her husband, Prince William, 35, was by her side for the birth of their third child.

“The baby weighed 8 lbs 7 oz,” Kensington Palace announced in a tweet. “The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

According to tradition, news of the birth was later displayed on an elaborate gold easel in front of Buckingham Palace, but by then everyone knew the news.

The roadway in front of the maternity entrance at St. Mary’s Hospital was lined with hundreds of reporters from around the world.

Prince George, 4, who was wearing his school uniform, and Princess Charlotte, 2, came to meet their new sibling on Monday afternoon. Before walking in, Charlotte gave a royal wave to the cameras. The children and their dad were all dressed in shades of dark and light blue.

Then, just before 6 p.m., the world got its first peek at the newest royal when the duke and duchess stepped out of the hospital. Kate, who was wearing a vivid red dress with a lace collar, cradled her newborn in her arms as they introduced their son to the world’s press. When his parents waved to the cameras, the royal baby’s tiny figures poked out from the white blanket he was wrapped in.

As the couple got into their waiting Land Rover, William told reporters that he was “very delighted, thank you.”

“Thrice the worry now,” he added.

“You’ll find out soon enough,” William said when asked about the baby’s name. George was 2 days old before the world learned of his name.

The Daily Mail said Kate’s personal stylist was spotted at the maternity ward before the unveiling. “Natasha Archer, who has been working with the royals for almost 10 years, THE MORE THINGS CHANGE … Prince Charles, Princess Diana and their newborn second son, Prince Harry, outside the Lindo Wing after Harry’s birth in September 1984. left St. Mary’s in Paddington just after 10 a.m., after Kate went into labour in the early hours of Monday morning,” the tabloid reported. THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME … Prince William, Duchess of Cambridge Catherine, in a strikingly similar red outfit, and their third child, a son, born Monday and introduced to the world in the same spot, outside the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital in London.
