MEET THE NEW DOLPHINS

- — STAFF REPORTS

The Dolphins’ picks in the NFL draft this weekend, listed with player, height, weight, position, college, and overall draft pick:

ROUND 1

Minkah Fitzpatrick, 6-0, 204, LB, Alabama, 11th

After getting over the disappointment of not landing a quarterback, Dolphins fans will realize they picked up a talented player who can play safety, outside cornerback or slot cornerback. GM

Chris Grier calls him a “Swiss Army knife.” Fitzpatrick has extraordinary competitiveness, range and speed.

ROUND 2

Mike Gesicki, 6-6, 247, TE, Penn State, 42nd

Gesicki is a basketball-style athlete who the team hopes will become a huge factor in the passing game. He is the franchise’s highest-selected tight end since Andre Tillman in 1974. He will get a chance to compete for the starting job immediately when organized team activities begin in May.

ROUND 3

Jerome Baker, 6-1, 229, LB, Ohio State, 73rd

Baker has range and speed and can cover tight ends, a weakness Miami is trying to address in this draft. Baker has been compared to Jets and former Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee. Baker said he can play fast, run fast and has excellent football IQ. He also said he can be effective in coverage.

ROUND 4

Durham Smythe, 6-5, 253, TE, Notre Dame, 123rd

Smythe has been credited as one of the better blocking tight ends in this year’s class. In 22 career games at Notre Dame, he caught just 28 passes for 381 yards and six touchdowns.

Kalen Ballage, 6-2, 228, RB, Arizona State, 131st

Ballage ran a 40-yard dash of 4.46 seconds, brings power and speed and can return kicks and plays special teams. Scored eight TDs in a game against Texas Tech. He is very strong and has good hands, but runs upright and needs to improve his decisiveness.

ROUND 5

No pick.

ROUND 6

Cornell Armstrong, 5-11, 180, CB, Southern Miss, 209th

Armstrong said he models his game after Bucs cornerback Brent Grimes, an ex-Dolphin. (No Miko jokes, please). Armstrong had 22 tackles last season. He also had two interceptions for 46 yards, including one for a touchdown.

ROUND 7

Quentin Poling, 6-0, 235, LB, Ohio, 227th

Poling’s production, athletic testing and ability to potentially handle some coverage duties made him a late Day 3 selection, according to his NFL.com scouting report. At the NFL Combine, he ran a 4.58 40-yard dash with a 38-inch vertical leap and a 10-foot-7 broad jump.

Jason Sanders, 5-11, 186, K, New Mexico, 229th

Sanders has a big leg. He kicked a 52-yard field goal into a 26-mph wind to give the Lobos a 23-20 victory over Texas-San Antonio in 2016. Of his 219 career kickoffs in college, only 66 were returned.
