Hughes joins Padres
The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Phil Hughes and $14.5 million from the Minnesota Twins for minor catcher Janigson Villalobos, hoping the former All-Star can find his form in a new spot. The last-place Padres also got the 74th pick in next month’s draft from Minnesota in the deal. Hughes was designated for assignment last Monday and was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 12 innings over seven games, two of them starts. Hughes will begin as a reliever with the Padres.
Braves: Placed OF Ron Acuna Jr. on the 10-day DL with an ACL sprain in his left knee and bruises to his knee and lower back. Acuna’s leg buckled while running out a grounder Sunday in Boston. He fell on his back after crossing the bag, then rolled over on his front side with what looked to be a gruesome injury before surprisingly walking off the diamond.
Mets: Placed right-hander A.J. Ramos and infielder Wilmer Flores on the 10-day disabled list and activated right-hander Hansel Robles and catcher Kevin Plawecki from rehab assignments.
Pirates: Placed starting pitcher Ivan Nova on the 10-day DL with a sprained ring finger on his right hand.
White Sox: Placed infielder Matt Davidson on the 10-day DL (back spasms).
Rockies: Placed righthanded reliever Adam Ottavino on the 10-day DL with a strained left oblique.
Giants: San Francisco Giants purchased the contract of right-hander Dereck Rodriguez — son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez — from Triple-A Sacramento.
