Honda Classic gives $15K to boy’s charity
Palm Beach Gardens boy, 7, and family show ‘UnLIMBited’ potential.
Founded by Tommy Morrissey, 7, a golf prodigy with only one arm, the foundation will use the money to help at least three kids.
PALM BEACH GARDENS — The UnLIMBited Foundation and its 7-year-old founder received a big boost from The Honda Classic on Wednesday morning.
Palm Beach Gardens resident Tommy Morrissey, a golf prodigy who was born with one arm, accepted a check for $15,000 from Honda Classic executive director Ken Kennerly and tournament director Andrew George on behalf of the Jupiter-based foundation.
UnLIMBited, which works with the Paley Institute at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, provides financial aid packages to families who would otherwise have to choose amputation over life-saving surgeries for children born with complex limb differences.
The foundation has been registered as a 501c(3) nonprofit organization since January 2017 and raised more than $98,000 last year.
Wednesday’s check presentation was held at Sandhill Crane Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens.
“Honda Classic Cares Week is all about learning more about the organizations that we support,” George said. “People like Tommy and the UnLIMBited Foundation are making it possible for kids and families that are in need ... and have big dreams. He’s mak-
ing it possible for them to have those dreams come into reality.”
Wednesday’s donation will go a long way toward helping save children’s limbs, said Tommy’s mom, Marcia Morrissey.
“It’ll help at least three kids receive limb-saving surgery instead of amputation,” she said. “That’s huge. If we could save one child’s limbs from being amputated, it’s worth it all.”
Tommy, who showed off his golf swing for the media Wednesday morning, has had tremendous success on the golf course despite his lack of a right arm.
He began competing in tournaments at age 3, and recently placed second in his age division at the North Carolina state championships. He’ll play in the Florida state championships in Daytona Beach this month and heads to the world championships at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina in August.
In April, he was featured on “Little Big Shots,” a show created by Ellen DeGeneres and Steve Harvey with the tagline “Never too young to be amazing.”
Wednesday’s check presentation was one of many made by The Honda Classic as part of Honda Classic Cares Week. On Monday, the PGA Tour event announced it will distribute a record-setting $4.55 million this year to South Florida children’s charities.
Children’s Healthcare Charity, Inc., the host organization of The Honda Classic, will make the distributions.
