Getting your ‘immediate denture’

-

If the time comes in your life to now wear a denture, the first prosthesis that should be planned prior to having any teeth removed is called your “immediate denture.” This denture is given to you immediately after your teeth have been removed. It is used to transition you through the healing phase. At best this denture should be cosmetic and fit comfortably. The main goal of an immediate denture is to allow you to have teeth while your gums heal.

To make a properfitting denture requires time (at least three to four months of healing), as well as skill and artistry from both the practitioner and laboratory. There are several facial measurements that must be considered in order to create a comfortably fitting, natural-looking denture.

Your immediate denture should not be your final denture. There are too many changes in your facial dynamics from the time your teeth are extracted until your gums are completely healed. In order to incorporate all these changes requires the construction of a second or “final” denture to correct them all. Don’t get fooled into thinking that the first denture will be enough.

When a final denture is made, your immediate denture can be modified to act as a spare in the event that your final denture should become lost or needs to be repaired.

If you want to have a natural-looking smile and the best, most comfortable fit, then a denture that is created to your own unique specifications is the only way to go.
