WEST PALM COP PLEADS IN THEFT CASE
WEST PALM BEACH — A West Palm Beach police officer accused of stealing money during an investigation took a plea in her case Tuesday.
tal Homic, 35, pleaded “best interest” to resolve the petty theft case from 2017. Homic was adjudicated guilty and Palm Beach County Judge Daliah Weiss sentenced her to a day in jail.
Homic was given credit for the day she already spent in jail when she was arrested. The officer was originally charged with official misconduct as well but those charges were dropped, according to court records.
As of Tuesday, Homic remained on unpaid leave from the department, according to Sgt. Dave Lefont, West Palm Beach police spokesman. She has been an officer with the department since March 2007, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records.
Homic voluntarily relinquished her law enforcement certification with FDLE during the hearing Tuesday, court records show.
In December 2017, police detained four people in connection with a burglary. As each was interviewed, personal property was put into inventory and documented on a prisoner property form.
One person had $600 kept behind his iPhone case, which an officer doc- umented. Homic, who was involved in the investigation, said she would log the rest of the property at her desk, the police report said.
Later, the person whose items were taken told police that a $100 bill. Additionally, investigators said $600 was documented on the inventory document. Homic initially told a detective that the person might have been mistaken.
Investigators later discovered the missing $100 bill under the desk at which Homic was working and a second inventory document with $500 written on it and with Homic’s signature.
