JUPITER — A roofing company faces nearly $150,000 in fines after failing to protect workers from falling, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Monday.

Crown Roofing of Sarasota was cited after OSHA inspectors in January visited a construction site on Blanca Isles Lane at DiVosta’s Sonoma Isles project in Jupiter.

OSHA said Crown Roofing neglected to use a guardrail, safety net or personal fall arrest system for roofers working more than 6 feet off the ground.

The agency said that during the inspection, workers were installing waterproofing material on the roof and were exposed to a fall of about 11 feet.

OSHA also issued citations for failing to regularly inspect job sites, materials and equipment, and for failing to maintain written records verifying that workers were trained in fall protection.

“This employer is risking the safety of workers by failing to comply with fall protection requirements,” Condell Eastmond, director of OSHA’s Fort Lauderdale area office, said in a statement. “Fall hazards are well known, but they can be eliminated when workers are trained and protective equipment is properly used.”

The proposed fines total $149,662.

Sonoma Isles is located north of Indiantown Road just west of Florida’s Turnpike and Interstate 95.

Prices for single-family homes start at $700,000.

OSHA said workers were exposed to a fall of about 11 feet.
