BOYNTON BEACH —A 17-year-old from Boynton Beach will be tried as an adult on charges of armed burglary after city police said he tried to steal an AK-47 assault rifle from a car outside of a liquor store.

Sidney Borno was arrested June 4 and charged as an adult June 25, court records show. He is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail after a judge set his bail at $200,000.

On June 3, the owner of Boynton Wine and Spirit and her two sons were closing the store, on North Federal Highway near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, when one son yelled that somebody was at his car, according to an arrest report.

The sons said they saw Borno leaving the Dodge Charger and noticed the assault rifle that the family kept in the front seat was missing, according to the report.

One son told police a wait- ing car began to drive in his direction, so he drew his gun and fired. A bullet hit the left bicep and rib cage of the teenager behind the wheel, police said.

The teen drove north with- out Borno and lost control of the car along North Fed- eral Highway in Lantana, offi- cers said. Borno ran with the AK-47 in a bag and dropped it along the way, according to the report. Police retrieved the gun.

An area resident held Borno at gunpoint and waited for the police to detain him as the teen walked through his backyard, police said. The man said he had heard four gunshots, then saw Borno shortly afterward.

Borno and the driver of the car, who has not been charged, messaged each other on Instagram to plan the robbery, police said, noting that they knew there was an AK-47 kept in the car.
