Japanese art exhibitions in Delray Beach
Even though school’s out, you can still learn cool things during the summer months. Expand your knowledge this weekend with the fascinating and rare collection of Japanese spinning tops at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens’ exhibition, “Edogoma: Japanese Spinning Tops.” Each delicate top was created by Hiroi Michiaki, a fourth-generation master craftsman and maker of Edo-era (1600-1868) tops. There’s also the museum’s other summer exhibition called “Unexpected Smiles: Seven Types of Humor in Japanese Paintings,” which includes works of parody, satire, wordplay, exaggeration and playfulness. What’s not to love about such fun and games?
“Edo-goma: Japanese Spinning Tops” and “Unexpected Smiles”: Both on display through Aug. 5. Adults $15, children 6 to 17 $9, seniors $13 and children under 6 are free. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach. Info: 561-495-0233 or www.morikami.org
