PASTERNAK, Richard
Dr. Richard Pasternak of Boynton Beach, Florida and Stockbridge, Massachusetts, passed away on July 16, 2018, at age 99 in New York City surrounded by family. Beloved husband of 63 years to Laura Shulman Pasternak (d 2007) and devoted father (and father-in-law) to Drs. Gavril, Reuven and Sara Pasternak and their respective spouses Sandi and Nancy Pasternak and Mathew Levine. Devoted "Peepa" to Katie (d 2008), David and wife Carly, Annie, Andrew and wife Kate, Robert, Jordan, Mimi, Max, and Joseph. Son of Lewis and Katie Pasternak, brother of Lillian, Mimi, and Pauline. Born September 7, 1918, in Baltimore, he grew up in Baltimore and New York, graduated from Boys High School in Brooklyn (1934), the Johns Hopkins University (1938) and Columbia School of Dentistry (1942) after which he served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps in World War II with combat infantry units in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. He settled in Hempstead, Long Island, where he maintained a practice in orthodontics. He was a member of Temple Beth Israel and the Hempstead Board of Education, including serving as President and leading the development and construction of a new high school in 1968. He was on the medical staff of Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he was Chief of the Cleft Palate Clinic, the faculty of the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, and President of the American Association of Orthodontics. Beloved father, friend, mentor, educator, community leader, and patriarch who was vibrant and delightful through the recent celebration of his 100th year just a few short weeks ago with his entire family and friends where he danced through the night and continues to dance in our hearts.
