Lane reductions in Jupiter are senseless
Again I must be living in a parallel world from our local municipality leaders. For 42 years as a yearround Jupiter resident, and one who has traveled Route 1 through Tequesta on a frequent basis during those years, I can count on two hands the number of people I have seen walking and biking from the Intracoastal bridge to County Line Road.
There have been adequate sidewalks along Route 1 from when it was widened to six lanes when I moved here in 1976, and no one uses them. There is minimal residential building along that route and, coupled with the Florida temperatures (100 degrees with humidity) for a good part of the year, nothing makes that route conducive for walking no matter how wide the sidewalks are.
But now automobile traffic is going to be hindered through that zone because of the two-lane removal. Already traffic backs up onto the bridge headed north because of the closure of the northbound lane during the construction phase. The intersection of Alternate A1A and Route 1 is an extremely busy one, and now it will be even busier because of this lane closure.
Instead of aiding in automobile traffic flow, there will now be more congestion through that area for the sake of a few pedestrians. That makes no sense.
When the bridge over the Intracoastal will be replaced in a few years (a project that will take a few years to complete) that route through Tequesta will be undriveable, especially with fewer lanes.
Does anyone ever look ahead in their planning? It doesn’t seem that way. DONALD PODOLSKY, JUPITER
