FAU star Singletary gets his own billboard

- By Jake Elman

BOCA RATON — It might be fair to say that Florida Atlantic All-American running back Devin Singletary has officially hit college football stardom.

After all, how many other Division I players can say they have their own billboard?

As part of the school’s “Winning in Paradise” marketing plan, FAU has placed a “Heisman in Paradise” billboard featuring Singletary — a dark-horse Heisman Trophy candidate who ran for 1,920 yards and an FBS-best 32 rushing touchdowns last season — off of the Woolbright Road exit on I-95. A former local star at American Heritage, Singletary’s 44 career rushing touchdowns are the most by any FAU running back in program history.

“I think it is a big honor,” Singletary said through a university spokesperson. “It’s great for me, but more importantly, it is a team and family accomplishment.”

Owls head coach Lane Kiffin, who was with Singletary and senior linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair at last week’s C-USA Media Kickoff in Texas, tweeted a picture of the billboard Thursday afternoon.

Singletary was also one of six Owls named to the AllCUSA preseason team.

FAU also recently placed a billboard featuring Kiffin and the “Winning in Paradise” tagline near the southbound Atlantic Avenue exit on I-95.

Players will report to FAU for training camp on Aug. 2, less than a month before the Owls start their season at Oklahoma on Sept. 1.

More preseason hype for Singletary: Another day, another watch list recognition for Singletary.

After being named to the Maxwell Award (best overall player) watch list on Monday and picked as the Conference USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year later that day, Singletary was one of 62 running backs selected for the Doak Walker watch list on Wednesday. The award is given to the best running back in college football.

Singletary is one of four semifinalists from last season to make this year’s list, joining 2017 winner Bryce Love (Stanford), Jonathan Taylor (Wisconsin), and Justice Hill (Oklahoma State). Other Conference USA running backs named to the list include UAB’s Spencer Brown, Old Dominion’s Jeremy Cox and Middle Tennessee’s Taveras Thomas.

Southern Cal’s Reggie Bush (2005) and Alabama’s Derrick Henry (2015) both won the award with Kiffin as their offensive coordinator.

No running back from a non-Power Five school has won the Doak Walker since BYU’s Luke Staley in 2001.
