ROYAL PALM BEACH — The Village Council has approved spending more than $1.2 million to expand the recreational vehicle and boat parking storage lot near Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery.

The council awarded the contract last week to Almazan Construction, a Loxahatchee-based firm.

The plans call for a 144-space RV storage lot, which will include base preparation, a concrete parking lot, lighting, security cameras and fencing.

“It’s a good use for the space,” said Chris Marsh, Royal Palm’s village engineer.

The project was originally proposed in December 2014 because the old parking lot on Crestwood Boulevard was being sold, so a new single-family home community could be built on the 151-acre site. The council decided the parking expansion would be done in two phases based on need.

“The first phase spaces are full,” Marsh said about why they are expanding now. The second phase should be completed in about eight to nine months, he said.

The town spent about $94,000 on the first phase, which was completed in 2015. About 150 spaces were created then.

Marsh said Lamstein Lane was chosen because the village is limited in what can be built on the property since the site is under Florida Power & Light’s power lines.

“We can’t build any structures there,” he said. “Putting a parking lot there makes sense.”
