Cooper lands back on DL with wrist injury

- Miami Herald

MIAMI — The Marlins will again have to wait to get a good look at Garrett Cooper in the majors.

Cooper, the team’s 27-yearold rookie first baseman/ outfielder, was placed on the disabled list after reinjuring his right wrist over the weekend in Tampa Bay.

Cooper underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a right wrist sprain. The Marlins did not immediately have an exact timetable for how long they expect Cooper to be out.

Cooper suffered a partial tear of the tendon sheath of his right wrist in the second game of the season, sidelining him for three months.

Cooper, who the Marlins acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees in the offseason, has been limited to only 14 games this season.

Since his return July 6, Cooper appeared in 10 games and started seven. He started three games each at left field and first base and made one start in right field, where he started opening day.

Because of the injury, Cooper has barely had time to get into any sort of rhythm at the plate. He hit .231 (6 of 26) since coming off the DL and is hitting .212 for the season.

To take Cooper’s place on the roster, the Marlins called up rookie Magneuris Sierra. Sierra, who was acquired in the offseason from St. Louis in the Marcell Ozuna trade, was 0 for 3 in his debut Tuesday.

The speedy Sierra, the Marlins’ No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, is slashing .260/.287/.341 this season at Triple-A New Orleans.

Injury updates: Top pitching prospect Sandy Alcantara (right axillary infection) pitched two innings at Class A Jupiter on Monday night. Alcantara gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits and a walk and struck out two. He threw 47 pitches.
