How you can have two procedures simultaneously

- PLASTIC SURGERY Michael Frederick, MD

Question :DoI need a tummy tuck or liposuction, or both? Can I do at the same time?

Answer:

Yes, with a lipoabdominoplasty.

The traditional abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) separated the skin from the blood vessels underneath it as part of the surgery, which then made it unsafe to remove the extra fat at the same time. However, as our understanding of the anatomy improved, new techniques have been developed that allow us to liposuction the entire abdomen while also getting rid of the excess skin as well.

“Lipoadominoplasty” was created in Brazil and I learned the technique from some of the worldrenowned plastic surgeons at the Pitanguy Institute in Rio De Janeiro. With the lipoabdominoplasty, I can create a thin and smooth contour from the ribs all the way down to the mons pubis area without the usual hump that lies just above the scar of a traditional tummy tuck. At the same time, I can liposuction the flanks or hips to create that beautiful hourglass shape.

After pregnancy, women often get a separation of their abdominal muscles called “rectus diastasis” that gives a bloated and rounded shape to their belly, even if they do not have excess fat. The lipoabdominoplasty technique allows me to fix the muscles as well, and all without the placement of a drain.
