In House District 22, Deutch and Walters deserve your support

-

Ted Deutch, a solid if unassuming member of Congress since 2010, came into his own this year as a forceful voice for causes important to Democrats.

When 17 people died at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Deutch rose as a vigorous voice for gun control and has been looking increasingly comfortable in the national spotlight.

Since then, the Democrat from

Boca Raton pressed a Facebook executive at a hearing on why the social network hasn’t suspended conspiracy hawker InfoWars for spreading false, defamatory stories about, among other things, Parkland shooting victims. In another hearing, Deutch tried to temper the Republican scorching of FBI agent Peter Strzok, cooly urging the scalp-hunters to shift their focus from Stzrok’s anti-Trump text messages to “exactly what a hostile foreign adversary did to interfere with our democracy.”

We endorse Deutch for reelection in House District 22, which encompasses much of north Broward County as well as Boca Raton west to Florida’s Turnpike.

His opponent in the Democratic primary on Aug. 28, Jeff Fandl, an IT professional who supports single-payer health care and a stronger financial safety net for the unemployment, did not respond to a request for an interview with the Editorial Board.

Deutch, 52, says he’ll continue to push for a better minimum wage, reducing big money in politics, protecting voting rights, strengthening Social Security and Medicare, and addressing threats of climate change. But mostly, for stronger gun control laws.

In the Republican primary, we endorse Eddison Walters, 51, a commercial real estate lender with a doctorate in business administration who describes himself as “the only Republican who can win District 22 in November.”

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Walters touts extensive experience working with small businesses.

Neither of Walters’ opponents, Javier Manjarres, owner of Shark Tank Media, a website about Florida conservative politics; or Nicolas Kimaz, founder of Lifelong Naturopathic Remedies, an herbal supplement company, spoke to the Editorial Board.
