BOCA RATON — It’ll happen in a basketball arena instead of an auditorium and a week later than planned, but Florida Atlantic University will host a makeup graduation this morning after canceling a commencement ceremony last week.

More than 400 students planned on walking the stage Aug. 7, but a “credible threat” prompted university officials and police to evacuate the auditorium and cancel the ceremony.

Fifteen international and out-of-state students participated in an intimate do-over ceremony last week.

Others will collect their diplomas today at 9:30 a.m., the university said in a statement.

The ceremony will be held at the basketball arena at the Boca Raton campus, once the site of graduation ceremonies years ago, said university spokesman Joshua Glanzer. The school will build a temporary stage on the basketball court for students to cross and collect their diplomas.

By 2:30 p.m. Monday, about half the 432 students who didn’t graduate last week confirmed they’d attend today’s ceremony, Glanzer said. The university expects about 1,000 students and guests to attend.

There will be metal detectors at the entryways, as was the case last week, officials say. Security will also check bags.

The incident unfolded last week after a Florida Atlantic employee found the threat targeted at the commencement ceremony, scribbled on a Post-it note. The note was found on a bathroom mirror in the business building moments before the 5 p.m. commencement ceremony was set to start, university police said.

Police did not say what was written on the note, but it was “credible” enough that officials ushered guests from the auditorium, directed graduates to leave campus and canceled the ceremony. The situation was cleared about two hours later.

University police still are investigating the “credible threat.” They have not released any additional information about the incident.
