A life of service
n McCain’s decades of public service made him a largerthan-life figure in U.S. politics. Here are key moments in that life:
AFTER SCANDAL, A FOCUS ON CAMPAIGN FINANCE
McCain moved to Arizona in 1981, where he won a seat in the House of Representatives in 1982 and the Senate in
1986. He became known as an independent-minded conservative, but his involvement in the Keating Five savings-and-loan scandal nearly ended his career. After that, McCain made campaign finance reform one of his signature issues.
2000: A RUN FOR PRESIDENT
McCain’s campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000 was propelled largely by his reputation for personal integrity and candor.
But McCain dropped out of the race in March 2000 after a loss in the South Carolina primary and a string of disappointments on Super Tuesday.
THE CURRENT ERA
McCain had a strained relationship with Donald Trump, who mocked his time as a prisoner of war when he said in 2015:
“He is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” Trump criticized him for his vote in 2017 against a plan to replace the Affordable Care Act. On Saturday, Trump offered his “deepest sympathies and respect” to the McCain family, who had asked, before the senator’s death, that Trump not attend the funeral.
