Boynton Woman’s Club closed for repairs
Club set to reopen in November with new roof, cosmetic fixes.
BOYNTON BEACH — The Boynton Woman’s Club will be closed until November while construction workers install a new roof and complete repairs on the historic building.
Roof construction for the twostory building started July 18 and is estimated to be complete in mid-November weather permitting, said Thuy Shutt, assistant director with the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).
The building is in “maintenance repair mode” and other minor renovations such as new paint on the inside, new railings and refinished floors will take place once the roof is finished, Shutt said.
The roof was replaced about 10 years ago through the club using county grants, but the CRA wants to give it a “cosmetic makeover,” Shutt said.
“It is a historic building so care needs to be taken by finding the right contractor and right materials,” Shutt said.
The Boynton Woman’s Club was built in 1925 as a memorial to the founder of the town, Major Nathan S. Boynton. It served as the town’s first public library and the first meeting place for several local churches and service organizations. In 1979, the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The CRA only has a budget for minor cosmetic work, but there could be room for other renovations if it is approved by the CRA board in the next fiscal year, which starts after Oct. 1.
“We are trying to get cosmetic work done so we can provide good social gatherings. There aren’t many venues like this,” Shutt said.
Residents are not able to book events at the building until after Nov. 4, but they are already getting calls for holiday events, Shutt said. The club will be able to hold regular events in the building in December.
Woman’s Club members are holding meetings and other events at the First Baptist Church on the corner of North Seacrest and Boynton Beach boulevards, said Kay Baker, president of the Woman’s Club.
Two meetings, on Oct. 4 and Nov. 1, are for members only, Baker said. A public charity luncheon on Oct. 18 will also take place at the church.
The club’s main meeting in November, which is a luncheon and fashion show fundraiser for scholarships, will be at Benvenuto Restaurant on Federal Highway, Baker said.
“Hopefully everything will go as planned and we will be back in the building in December,” Baker said.
