Mexico’s Ancer takes 1-shot lead at Dell Championship

-

Abraham Ancer of Mexico opened with three straight birdies on his way to a 6-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over a familiar figure going into the final round of the Dell Technologies Championship.

It wasn’t Tiger Woods, but the guy playing with him — Bryson DeChambeau, who is coming off a four-shot victory in the first FedEx Cup playoff event and shot 63 on Saturday while playing with Woods for the first time in a tournament. DeChambeau and Tyrrell Hatton (69) were one shot behind.

It figures to be another frantic Labor Day finish on the TPC Boston.

Ancer was at 13-under 200. Ten players were within four shots of the lead, a group that includes Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth. Woods shot 69 and was six back.

DeChambeau opened with two birdies and finished even stronger, with short birdie putts on the 16th and 17th, then a 5-iron from 237 yards that stopped rolling 2 feet from the hole for an eagle. Not since Vijay Singh in 2008 has anyone captured the opening two FedEx Cup events. DeChambeau was never seriously challenged last week.

European Tour: Thorbjorn Olesen claimed the final automatic qualification spot on the European Ryder Cup team after Matthew Fitzpatrick failed to win the Made in Denmark event in Aarhus.

Fitzpatrick needed to overturn a six-shot deficit to leader Lee Westwood going into the final round but it was another Englishman, Matt Wallace, who claimed victory. Wallace came through a four-man playoff against Westwood, Steven Brown and Jonathan Thomson to win at European Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn’s home course.

Having claimed a third victory in his last 15 tournaments, Wallace could now be a contender, alongside Fitzpatrick, for one of Bjorn’s four wild-card picks, which the Dane will reveal Wednesday.

Despite finishing eight shots off the lead at his home tournament, Olesen can now watch Bjorn’s announcement over the Sept. 28-30 matchup with the United States at Le Golf National in Paris with his place assured.

Fitzpatrick will hope his 6-under 66 to end the tournament 16 under will have impressed Bjorn.

Olesen joins Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Alex Noren on the European team.

Champions: Scott McCarron had a one-hop ace on the par-3 14th and closed with a birdie to successfully defend his Shaw Charity Classic title in Calgary, Alberta.

McCarron shot a 7-under 63 for a one-stroke win over Scott Parel, Joe Durant and Kirk Triplett at Canyon Meadows. McCarron finished at 15-under 195.

LPGA: Georgia Hall pulled away from Minjee Lee late in the third round to take a twostroke lead in the Cambia Portland (Ore.) Classic.

Hall shot a 3-under 69, birdied the par-3 16th and par-4 17th and made a 6-foot par save on the par-4 18th at Columbia Edgewater.
