DAVIE — The race between Brock Osweiler and David Fales to win the Dolphins’ No. 2 quarterback job is ongoing, and Osweiler is fine with that.

His opportunity to salvage a wayward career continues this week with his chance to be Ryan Tannehill’s backup onSunday againstTennessee. Osweiler played well in Denver in 2015, but has struggled since and lasted two weeks on the free-agent market before the Dolphins called.

“Every player in this league is very motivated to prove things on a weekly basis,” Osweiler said. “This is a league that someone’s always coming for your job and you’re always trying to keep your job. That’s what makes this league so special is because the competition’s always so high. We’re all constantly trying to prove something.”

He’s already provensomething by making the team. The Dolphins went into theoffseason expecting Fales to be the No. 2 quarterback, but Osweiler matched him throughout practices and preseason games. Coach Adam Gase has indicated that they’re even and he would not commit to naming one as the backup.

Osweiler completed 62.1 percent of his passes, had 321 yards and threw two touchdowns with one interception in the preseason. Fales finished at 57.4 percent, 278 yards, no touchdowns and three picks.

The biggest thing for Osweiler during his time with the Dolphins has been improving his footwork. He believes he’s made significant progress there.

“My feet are quicker and better than they’ve ever been, and that’s really a credit to our coaching staff,” he said.

Young returns: Offensive tackle Sam Young was re-signed Monday while safety Maurice Smith was waived. Young, cut Sunday, is a nineyear veteran who played in 18 games for Miami the last two seasons.

The Dolphins also signed center Travis Swanson, 27, a former third-round pick who played 53 games (42 starts) for the Lions over the past four seasons. He was with the Jets this offseason before they cut him at the roster deadline. Pro Football Focus ranked him the No. 32 center in the NFL last season.

He started 11 games for the Lions in 2017, but missed time because of a concussion for the secondyear in a row.

Swanson will be with the team when it opens practice Wednesday in preparation for the season opener.
