Europe’s Bjorn opts for Cup veterans
In a selection that rewarded experience over form, captain Thomas Bjorn balanced a team overflowing with rookies by picking Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Henrik Stenson as his wild cards for Europe’s bid to regain the Ryder Cup from the United States in Paris from Sept. 28-30.
“You need people like that,” Bjorn said, “who have been there and done it, positively and negatively.”
Bjorn added the quartet to a team containing automatic qualifiers Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Thorbjorn Olesen, Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood and Alex Noren. The four captain’s picks have made 20 Ryder Cup appearances between them, and each has won at least 50 percent of their matches in the competition. Their average age is 40.75.
ODDS AND ENDS
MLB: The Angels say Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani has new damage in his right elbow and Tommy John surgery has been recommended. The club said Ohtani had an MRI that revealed the problem in his ulnar collateral ligament. Ohtani was still in the Angels’ lineup as the designated hitter for their series finale against the Rangers.
■ The Dodgers are expected to be without AllStar closer Kenley Jansen for a key weekend series with the Rockies after a team cardiologist recommended the right-hander not travel to Denver. Twice in his career Jansen has experienced an irregular heartbeat while the Dodgers were in the high altitude of Colorado.
College football: Tennessee center Brandon Kennedy will miss the remainder of the season after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament during Tuesday’s practice.
