BOCA RATON — After shattering most of Florida Atlantic’s offensive records last season, junior running back Devin Singletary has an opportu- nity to make additional history this weekend.

Singletary enters Saturday’s home opener against Air Force needing 171 all-pur- pose yards to become the Owls’ all-time leader in that category. Alfred Morris, now with the San Francisco 49ers, holds record of 3,838 yards.

In 27 games, Singletary has 3,008 rushing yards, 374 receiving yards and 284 yards on kick returns. Morris had 3,529 rushing yards, 300 receiving yards and 14 yards on kick returns from 2008 to 2011.

After a historic season in which Singletary (American Heritage) ran for 1,920 yards and 32 touchdowns last season, he struggled – by his standards – against a stout Oklahoma defense in Saturday’s 63-14 loss. Singletary had 18 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown, and caught a 13-yard pass from quarterback Chris Robison.

It was the first game since a 31-14 loss to Wisconsin on Sept. 9, 2017, that Singletary did not run for more than 100 yards. In FAU’s 10-game win- ning streak to end the season, he ran for 1,559 yards and 27 touchdowns.

“We missed a few details,” Singletary said. “Got to get back to the drawing board.”

Singletary still trails Morris by 520 yards on the all-time rushing list but can move past Charles Pierre into second place if he gains at least 60 yards against Air Force. Pierre was a staple in the Owls’ offense from 2004 to 2008, their first years as an FBS program.

As a team, FAU rushed for 132 yards against the Soon- ers, averaging only 3.1 yards per carry. Singletary and backup Kerrith Whyte (Seminole Ridge) scored the Owls’ touchdowns and quarterback De’Andre Johnson ran for 39 yards on nine carries.

“We’ve got to come together ev e n m ore,” Sing le tary s a id. “Got to become more of a team.”

Air Force held Stony Brook, an FCS team, to four first downs and 75 yards in total offense in a 38-0 win Saturday. But the Falcons were among the nation’s worst teams against the run last season, giving up nearly 233 yards per game.

IU players shot in drive-by: Two lorida International players visiting friends in Opa-locka on Thursday were shot and injured in what police said was a drive-by shooting.

Junior running back Anthony Jones and freshman offensive lineman Mershawn Miller were transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Opa-locka Police Chief James Dobson said.

Jones was shot in the face and back. Miller was shot in the arm.

Dobson said police were looking for a gray Nissan Sentra with no license tag.
