Please do your part to help prevent suicide among youth in state

-

As youth and families across the state settle into the new school calendar and fall quickly approaches, it is easy to be caught up in the early mornings, afterschool activities, late-night homework and weekend errands. Yet, as we go about our routines, every 32 hours one of Florida’s most valuable citizens commits suicide. Every 32 hours a child or teen falls victim.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and I, along with members of the Florida Network of Youth and Family Services, urge you to participate, to get involved and to take action against this devastating problem.

In Florida alone, suicide rates are above the national average. Even worse, suicide is the third-leading cause of death among Floridians ages 10–24 years. Still, despite these harsh realities, we must believe suicide prevention is possible.

While suicide is a tough concept or maybe even an uncomfortable topic for some, it is imperative that we speak out. Through education and advocacy, supporting awareness initiatives, making counseling service accessible and sparking attention that this is a real problem, affecting real youth, we can help those in need and even save lives.

We are a state full of advocates, resources and survivors. The Florida Network, along with numerous other organizations in our state, is passionate about helping youth and providing the services they need to create a foundation for a bright and successful future. We are not alone in this fight, and neither are those with thoughts of suicide.

This month (and throughout the year), please do your part to shine a light on youth suicides. Have those difficult conversations with the young people in your lives. Be aware and privy to the warning signs. Encourage open and honest conversations. Spread the resources available to youth in your community. And, most importantly, be understanding and accepting of the many challenges that affect our youths’ lives each day.

As we continue to spread awareness of suicide prevention, if you or someone you know is currently suffering in silence, please reach out and seek help. There are numerous resources throughout our country and state to support those in need.
