Suspended LB Davis back for Panthers

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis returned after serving a four-game suspension for testing positive for PEDs. Davis’ return, combined with the possible return of TE Greg Olsen from a broken foot this week and the team’s 33-31 win Sunday over the Giants, had the locker room abuzz Monday. “We got our leader back,” LB Shaq Thompson said of Davis, Carolina’s all-time leading tackler.

■ The Eagles placed RB Jay Ajayi on injured reserve with a knee injury. A person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity that Ajayi tore an ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

■ The Jaguars placed TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins and RB Corey Grant on injured reserve. Seferian-Jenkins will have core muscle surgery but could return later in the season. Grant will miss the rest of the year with a foot injury.

■ The Bears placed LB Sam Acho on injured reserve (torn pectoral muscle) and signed OL Bryan Witzmann.

■ Browns WR Rashard Higgins could miss games with a sprained knee. He’ll be evaluated week to week.

■ The Jets activated CB Rashard Robinson and released safety J.J. Wilcox.

NBA: Spurs starting PG Dejounte Murray has a torn ACL in his right knee, almost certainly ending his season.

■ The Suns fired general manager Ryan McDonough, eight days before the season begins. James Jones and Trevor Bukstein will share GM duties on an interim basis. Jones is the team’s vice president of basketball operations and Bukstein was assistant GM under McDonough.

College football: Oklahoma fired defensive coordinato­r Mike Stoops after the Sooners struggled to stop Texas in their first loss of the season. Ruffin McNeill, their assistant head coach and defensive tackles coach, will be DC for the rest of the season. The No. 11 Sooners (5-1) lost 48-45 Saturday, allowing 501 yards.

■ Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs is out indefinite­ly with a broken foot.

MLB: Minnesota Twins player Miguel Sano won’t face criminal charges in the Dominican Republic as a result of his involvemen­t in a traffic incident that injured a police officer, authoritie­s said. The third baseman was released from custody after striking the officer with his car, leaving him with a broken leg outside a nightclub in San Pedro de Macoris.

Golf: Kevin Tway made a 10-foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff late Sunday in Napa, Calif., to win the season-opening Safeway Open for his first PGA Tour title. Tway beat Ryan Moore on the par-4 10th after Brandt Snedeker dropped out on their first extra trip down the par-5 18th. Tway birdied the final two holes in regulation for a 1-under 71, then birdied all three holes in the playoff.

■ South Korea won the eight-nation Internatio­nal Crown for the first time in Incheon, South Korea. The top-seeded hosts started the final round two points clear of the chasing pack and won two of four singles matchups to finish with 15 points, four ahead of the defending champion United States and England.
