Adult writers of fiction invited to attend twice monthly meetings of the Phoenix Fiction Writers at the library. Free. Group meets second Thursday and third Tuesday of each month from 6:30to 9p.m. in the library’s Harrop Room. Led by Eric Parmer, offering local writers education, empowerment and constructive criticism. Writers ask questions about the writing process, read work out loud and receive/ offer input on material read. Writers wishing to have their work critiqued should submit to Eric before each meeting. Series presents films from a variety of genres showing how social class, iconic landmarks and a steadfast belief in the value of American history have played important roles in the representation of Philadelphia on screen. Organizational Meeting Aug. 23at 7p.m. Phoenixville Public Library plans to launch a new book discussion group this fall for adults in their 20s and 30s. The library will host an organizational meeting for the club. Those in attendance will be invited to provide input into what books are discussed and how the club is run. Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “Fighting Porn in Our Culture… and Winning!,” Sept. 1at 7p.m. Dr. Peter Kleponis, assistant director of comprehensive counseling services in West Conshohocken, will be the speaker. Pornography use is an epidemic in America. Pornography addiction is damaging marriages, families, careers and per- sonal lives. The average age when a child first encounters Internet pornography today is 8. The largest single population of internet pornography users today is youth between the ages of 12and 17. This enlightening presentation will educate parents and others on the dangers of pornography, how to protect their families and how to help those who are addicted. Seniors are invited to attend a Senior Social offered by Pennypacker Mills onWednesday, Sept. 7, Thursday, Sept. 8, or Friday, Sept. 9, at 1p.m. to enjoy a lively program about the Civil War. “Emergency Men” were called upon to defend Pennsylvania during the Gettysburg Campaign of the Civil War. One of those brave men was 20-year-old Samuel Pennypacker. Hear more about the experiences of young Pennypacker in the war as his unit engaged Confederates streaming toward Gettysburg. See his haversack and personal possessions that were brought home with him as mementos of this life-changing experience. Then, meet a Civil War re-enactor who will speak about life during the Civil War. Whether military or civilian, these reenactors share passionate stories of life on the battlefield and at home. Assisted living, senior centers, groups of friends and individuals are welcome to attend this program. Light refreshments will be served. The fee is $3per person. Seniors are welcome to stay afterward for a guided tour of the Pennypacker mansion and the new exhibit on the legacy of Samuel Pennypacker, located in the Galleries on the second floor. Please note in the registration if handicapped drop-off nearer to the Mansion is required. Please note that the Route 73Bridge over the Perkiomen Creek near the site entrance is closed. There is a short detour to Route 73 to reach the site; follow the signs.
