A Phoenixville man was convicted Wednesday on drug and firearms charges that resulted from being stopped by police in West Norriton.

Andrew Michael Coover, 26, of the 1400 block of Lincoln Street, was convicted by a jury in Montgomery County Court on charges of firearms not to be carried without a license, possession with intent to deliver controlled substances and possession of marijuana, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, according to court documents.

Coover was pulled over Sept. 4, 2015, near the 400 block of Egypt Road by Officer Joseph Gramas. During the trial, Gramas testified that he started the traffic stop because of a faulty brake light, but when he spoke to Coover, the driver, he smelled marijuana.

Gramas and another officer searched the car and found cash, marijuana and a cigarette pack that contained a baggie of methamphetamine. Police also found two digital scales, which Gramas testified are often used for packaging narcotics.

Inside the car, which did not belong to Coover but was lent to him, police also found a 9mm handgun loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, according to the criminal complaint, and a homemade dagger.

Coover’s trial took place over two days, after which the jury convicted him of all charges. He was remanded without bail and awaits sentencing pending the results of a pre-sentence investigation and drug, alcohol and mental health evaluation ordered by Judge William R. Carpenter.
