LAND20>> The Phantoms waited a week before they put some points on the board.

Week 2 brought more to cheer about for the purple and white as Matt Garcia continued his hot start with another 100-yard rushing effort in the Phantoms’ first win of the season.

Garcia finished with 159 yards on 29 carries as the Phantoms held a 20-13 lead midway through the second quarter before outscoring Upper Moreland 13-6 in the second half to break a five game losing streak dating back to last season.

Garcia opened the scoring with a 6-yard TD run and ran back a kickoff for a 74-yard TD in the second quarter. Quarterbac­k Troy Rossman (10-for-16, 88 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) dove in from one yard out to stay Phoenixvil­le’s 20-13 halftime lead.

Upper Moreland closed to within a point at 20-19 but receiver Nasir Green was key in the Phantoms closing it out.

Green scored two TDs in the second half to give Phoenixvil­le its final margin, a 22-yard TD pass from Rossman in the third quarter before has 16-yard TD catch from Matt Osisek Byrne provided the final score.

Green finished with four receptions for 57 yards.

Boys Soccer

DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 1, PERKIO

MEN VALLEY 0 >> Corron Hovington accounted for the game’s lone point, lifting the Downingtow­n West boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Perkiomen Valley in non-league play on Sept. 3.

Hovington converted a penalty kick at the 79:30 mark, complement­ing the combined three-save shutout goaltendin­g of Seth Porter and Jimmie Meals. Andrew Daubenspec­k had two saves for PV (1-1), which held a narrow 6-5 edge in shots but was out-cornered by West 8-3. PERKIOMEN VALLEY 2, MARPLE

NEWTOWN0 >> Matt McCabe and Kyle Bessette each scored to lift the Vikings past the Tigers in non-conference play on Sept. 2.

McCabe scored in the third minute with Bessette adding another in the 38th minute off a feed from Max Chamorro. Andrew Daubenspec­k made two saves in the shutout. SPRING-FORD 2, METHACTON 1, OT

>> Sal Ibarra broke open the tie in the 103rd minute with a shot from 20 yards out to send the Rams to an overtime PAC victory over the Warriors on Sept. 7.

Ronnie Minges also notched a goal for SF while Kyle Allen finished with four saves in goal. Kevin Conrad scored off an assist from Eric Kihle for Methacton’s lone goal. PERK IO MEN VALLEY 2, BOY ER TOWN

0 >> Andrew Daubenspec­k finished with four saves in goal for his second shutout of the season as the Vikings downed the Bears in PAC play on Sept. 7.

SPRING-FORD1>> East scored all of its goals in the second half, negating the Rams’ early tally en route to a nonleague victory on Sept. 3.

Shannon Kennedy, with Lexie Nugent on the assist, scored at the 25:16 mark of the first half to give SpringFord the lead. But East got

two goals from Jess Wilcox, and another from Caroline Webb, to come away with the win supported by the combined five-save goaltendin­g of Claire Riley and Chloe Irwin.

Lexi Ciano turned in seven-save goaltendin­g for Spring-Ford, which trailed East in both shots on goal (9-6) and corners (10-5). UNIONVILLE­4,SPRING-FORD

1 >> Four goal scorers paced Unionville to a win over Spring-Ford in both team’s season opener on Sept. 1

Katie Anderson, Maddie McDonough, MadisonMil­es andMorgan Lyons each tallied goals. Claire Donovan and Caroline Fisher each had assists. Lizzie Gaebel made six saves in the win.

OMEN VALLEY 0 >> Bridget Guinan scored the deciding goal with two minutes left in regulation as the Wildcats picked up a big early victory against the visiting Vikings on Sept. 7.

Natalie Fuertsch registered an assist in the win for OJR, which out shot PV 13-5 and held the advantage in penalty corners (12-7).

TOWN1>> Lexie Nugent’s hat trick keyed a potent offensive that lifted the Rams to a lopsided victory over the Eagles in PAC play on Sept. 7.

Nugent also assisted on a pair of SF goals. Caroline Todd had two goals and one assist, with Shannon Kennedy (two assists), Alexa Habermehl, Erin Wilson and Angelina Pinciotti also getting into the scoring act.

NIXVILLE 1 >> Abrianna Gatto had a part in six of the Tribe’s goals in a PAC win over the Phantoms on Sept. 7.

Gatto scored five times and added an assist while Kathryn Lehman, Liz Fox and Kaylie Siwy each notched a pair of goals in the win. Hope Flack posted four assists and Liz Pierson made three saves in goal. Katie Baker scored Phoenixvil­le’s lone goal.

PERMERION2­72>> Pope John Paul topped Upper Merion, 214-272, in Pioneer Athletic Conference action Tuesday afternoon at Gulph Mills.

OMENVALLEY­202>> Tommy Opitz shot a 1-under 33 to lead theWildcat­s’ charge in a PAC win over the Vikings at Kimberton Golf Club on Sept. 7

Ryan Glenn followed with a 1-over 35 while Matt Folk shot a 36. Ward McHenry (40) and Nick Massa (42) rounded out the OJR scorecard. Dallen Hall and Eric Martin each finished at 39 to lead PVwhile Andrew Burkhardt followed with a 40.

MEN VALLEY 195 >> Savanna Haas shot a seven-over par 42 to lead the Bears to a victory at Twin Ponds Golf Course, Par 35.

Natalie Stabilito (47), Abby Beidler (47) and Katie Goida (49) each registered good rounds on the nine-hole course to edge out the Vikings despite a terrific showing from Katie Pupillo (44) and Alyssa Washelski (46).

Boyertown is now 3-2 in the PAC and overall. PV falls to 0-3. PHOENIXVIL­LE 184, METH

ACTON 187 >> The Phantoms used a full team effort in the PAC win over Methacton at Skippack Golf Course on Sept. 7.

Emma Lawrie turned in a round-low 40 for Methacton, but Phoenixvil­le turned in the next four low-rounds with Grace Simenson (42) Allison Bradley (45) and Morgan Morris (48) each showing up on the scorecard.

DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 178,

SPRING-FORD 205 >> Liddie McCook, shooting a 39, was the lone golfer to break 40 as Downingtow­n East outshot the Rams in a PAC match at Linfield National on Sept. 7.

Emily Pochet was low person for Spring-Ford with a 46, followed by Sam Weidman’s 47.

Girls Cross Country

PHOENIXVIL­LE 22, UPPER

PERKIOMEN3­7>> Serena Detweiler nosed out Natalee Serwatka at the finish line, but the Phantoms scored a more-comfortabl­e teamvictor­y in their PAC meet with the Indians.

Detweiler was first in 20;47, followed closely from behind by Serwatka (20:48). But Phoenixvil­le placed in five of the next six spots, headed by Emma Visnov’s third in 22:57. PERKIOMENV­ALLEY17,OWEN

J. ROBERTS 38 >> She picked up right fromwhere she left off last fall.

Annie Glodek, with two Pioneer Athletic Conference championsh­ip-meet victories to her credit, got started toward a third in solid fashion Wednesday. The Perkiomen Valley senior was literally the runaway winner in her team’s league-opening cross country meet with Owen J. Roberts, leaving the rest of the field behind while leading the Vikings to a 17-38 victory on the Battle Creek course.

Glodek, who finished ninth at the PIAA Class AAA meet last season, covered the 3.1-mile layout in 19:18. She was a full minute ahead of the field, teammate Michele Daniels second at 20:19.

PV, the defending PAC champion and ranked first preseason among the state’s Class AAA schools, took five of the top six spots

with Teagen Scheinbeck­er third at 20:26. Julia Dorley (20:38) and Jocely Rotay (20:53) were a respective fifth and sixth behind OJR leader Ally Brunton, whose 20;30 clocking was good for fourth place. SPRING-FORD 15, NORRIS

TOWN 50 >> A trio of Rams crossed the finish line at the same time to key their PAC win over the Eagles.

Erin McKenna, Sophia Haas and Abby Sykes were all clocked at 24:29, followed by teammates Tori Hofner and Megan Richter at 24:30. Spring-Ford swept the top 10 spots and had the meet’s first 31 finishers.

Boys cross country

MENVALLEY4­8>> Liam Conway headed the Wildcats’ sweep of the first five spots, securing a PAC-opening victory over the Vikings.

Conway covered the Battle Creek course in 17:09, followed by ConnerMurr­ay at 17:33. Sean Barone (17:41), Kyle Malmstrom (18:09) and Zack Kardos (18:34) completed OJR’s first five.

Alex Wagoner was PV’s first finisher, coming across the line sixth overall in 18:42. SPRING-FORD 15, NORRIS

TOWN50>> The Rams dominated their PAC opener with the Eagles, placing runners in the first 17 spots.

Jacob McKenna crossed the line first for SpringFord, his 17:38 heading teammate Zach Smith (17:40). Norristown’s top finisher was Moises Castro, 18th in 19:53. PHOENIXVIL­LE 25, UPPER PERKIOMEN 32 >> Though Landon Detweiler claimed overall race honors for the Indians, the Phantoms took this PAC race by placing runners in seven of the first 10 spots.

Detweiler won handily in 17:32, ahead of Phoe- nixville’s Christian Schaaf (17:50). But the Phantoms were aided by Aaron Hin’s third (17:55) and a fifth by Conor Wilchusky (18:21).

Girls Tennis

SPRING-FORD 7, POPE JOHN

PAUL II 0 >> Tori Alexander swept her first-singles match to lead the Rams’ victory over the Golden Panthers in PAC action on Sept. 7.

Alexander recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win on PJP’s Cassie Sucoloski. The Panthers’ best individual effort came at third singles, where Kelsey Macaluso won five games. PERKIOMEN VALLEY 7, NOR

RISTOWN 0 >> The Vikings handled the undermanne­d Eagles to come away with the PAC win on Sept. 7.

OliviaNewm­an and Kristen Koenig, playing at second and third singles, recorded matching 6-1, 6-0 wins to key PV’s sweep of singles. It was unconteste­d in doubles, Norristown unable to put out any teams. PHOENIXVIL­LE 7, BOYER

TOWN 0 >> The Phantoms lost just four games in singles play as they swept the Bears in theirPACma­tchon Sept. 7.

Phoenixvil­le was led by singles players Julia Gumieniak and Gina Brown, who took their respective first and secondmatc­hes by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Girls volleyball

VILLE0>> Andrea Castaneda posted seven kills as the Warriors swept the Phantoms in straight sets.

Methactonw­on 25-18, 2515 and closed it with a 2519 decision. Castaneda also had an ace and four digs. Carlie Ginther posted 15 assists, five kills, three aces and a dig while senior Ashley Newman had six digs and an ace.
