Cabrini University senior Kelly Guarino was named Colonial States Athletic Conference Player of the Year in women’s volleyball last week and last Sunday, the 5-foot-6 outsidehitter showed everyone the reason why.

Guarini, fromPottstown (Pope John Paul II), led the Cavaliers to their fourth straight CSAC title with a 3-2 victory over Keystone. Her kill in the fifth set gave the team the set victory and the title. She finished with eight kills and a team-high 27 digs and the two-year team captain will lead Cabrini into the NCAA Division III Tournament that opens this weekend.

“Kelly is one of the most selfless, team-first players that I have ever coached,” Eric Schaefer said. “She was an all-conference and all-region libero as a junior but we moved her to outside hitter this year to help the team. She took the challenge and ran with it.”

The versatile Guarino led the team in digs with 466 and tied for the lead in service aces with 54. She also had 246 kills, 27 assists and 15 blocks.

The Cavaliers are 18-14 overall and captured the CSAC regularseason title with an 11-0 record.

“Kelly is our only senior and she has rallied this team,” Schaefer said. “She pushes the players to work hard at practice and to be accountable for their roles on the team.” The freshman cornerback was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week after a big effort to help the 5-4 Susquehanna football team turn back Franklin & Marshall 2010 on Oct. 29 in Selinsgrove. The 5-foot-9, 170-pounder had eight tackles including three for losses, a forced fumble and fumble recovery and an interception. He had three tackles and a pass breakup in a 37-20 victory over McDaniel last Saturday and he has 27 tackles, including 18 solo, for the season.

She has played in 19 games with 16 starts for the Hawks and has two goals and a team-high nine assists for 13 points. She ranks first in the league and 13th in Division I in assists. The Hawks won the regular season title with a 9-0-1 record and are 18-2-2 after losing the league championship game as the No. 1 seed 7-0 to No. 6 seed Dayton on Sunday in Kingston, R.I.

The 5-foot-4 sophomore was named to the PSAC first team for her play in goal with the Shippensburg field hockey team. She has given up eight goals with 74 saves with 12 shutouts. Mooney and the No. 1 seed Raiders were beaten 2-1 by No. 4 seed Millersville in the league title game on Sunday in East Stroudsburg. Mooney had four saves in the game. The setback dropped Shippensburg to 17-3 heading into the Division II Tournament. Millersville is 17-4 and earns an automatic NCAA bid.
