Phoenixvil­le boys basketball wins title at Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood

Phoenixvil­le defeated McKee/Staten Island Tech in the championsh­ip game of the Jack Buchanan Bracket at the Boardwalk Basketball Classic in Wildwood, N.J., on Dec. 31.

Shyheim Abernathy led the Phantoms (7-2), leading all scorers with 30 points. Abernathy’s 13 field goals are tied for the sixth most in Boardwalk Classic history

Avery Close had 22 points, while PhilMeszar­os (8 points), Colton Brown (6 points), Hunter Herschell (5 points) and Nasir Green (4 points) rounded out the scoring for Phoenixvil­le, which raced out to leads of 17-12 after one quarter and 37-27 by halftime.

The Boardwalk Basketball Classic is a six day tournament held to raise college scholarshi­p money for graduating seniors for the two high schools that host the tournament, Wildwood andWildwoo­d Catholic.

The Boardwalk Basketball Classic is the largest co-ed high school basketball tournament in the country. Since its inception in 1998, the Boardwalk Basketball Classic has raised over $295,000 in scholarshi­p money.

Shyheim Abernathy and Avery Close combined for 34 points as the Phantoms rode a big second-quarter surge to victory in the Wildwood Classic’s Jack Buchanan Bracket on Dec. 30.

Abernathy had 19 points while Close contribute­d 15 points and eight rebounds. They led Phoenixvil­le into the bracket’s championsh­ip game by using a 21-10 edge in second-quarter scoring to reverse OC’s initial 16-10 advantage.

DariusMcGo­wan scored a team-best 18 points for the Eagles, which saw their two-game winning streak end.

Two Rams figured with 20-plus points as Spring-Ford outscored the Bears 44-19 in the second half to pull away with the victory in a divisional contest on Jan. 3.

Chucky Drummond’s 22-point night was complement­ed by a 20-point

showing from Ryan Fitzpatric­k as the duo finished with four 3-pointers apiece in the win. Austin Hokanson also finished in doublefigu­res, finishing with 14.

Jerry Kapp was the leading scorer for the Bears, finishing with 26 points including five 3-pointers.

The Falcons overcame a 26-point effort from Phoenixvil­le’s Shyheim Abernathy to come away with a victory in a Frontier Division contest on Jan. 3.

Nik Curnew finished with a team-best 18 points while Alex Salara added 14 points and Steve Hein 13 for a Falcons squad that led after every quarter.

Ryan Fitzpatric­k scored 16 points, and Robert Bobeck added another 10, to lead the Rams in their non-league victory over Hempfield on Friday night.

Wrestling

The Eagles forfeited away eight weights during a PAC loss to the Rams on Wednesday, January 4.

Jack Files posted Spring-

Ford’s lone pin in the opening bout at 170 before Jake Pajovich posted a technical fall over Gabe Stribny at 132. Jonathan Westlake had a 10-2 major decision over Tim Cheng at 145 before Ben D’Arcangelo posted a 2-1 decision in the final bout at 152. Zachary DeSanto (126) and Matt Koresko (138) both posted pins for UM.

The Vikings scored 30 unanswered points at the outset, then cruised to victory over the Falcons in a nondivisio­nal matchup of PAC schools on Wednesday.

PV got pins from Cody Jefferies (138), Kevin Lovett (152) and Hunter Ricci (160) to help build its early lead, then got another fall from Jahir Holmes (285). Pottsgrove, which forfeited three weights, got a pin fromRyan Finn (195) along with decisions by Skylar McLeod (220), Josh Cerrito (120) and Chase Banyai (126).

The Bears claimed all 14 bouts en route to a PAC win over the visiting Phantoms on Wednesday night.
