Spring-Ford Ice Hockey wins American Division

Ice Hockey

The Spring-Ford Middle School B teamwas crowned champions of the American Division of the Ice Line Middle School Hockey League this season.

Spring-Ford defeated Rustin Blue 5-4 in the championsh­ip game on March 30. The Spring-Ford team, comprised of players from4th-to-8th grade, went 6-1 in the postseason.

The team is comprised of: James Trythall, Bradley Greenfield, Luke Barcalow, Eric Moriarity, Jack Paster, Jack Gallagher, Jake Ciavarelli, Rilan Gable, AdamMelens­ki, Joey Sacchetti, Dean German, GunnarWolf­f, Lily Clifford, Grant Olson.

The team is led by head coach Joe Sacchetti and assistants Matt Paster, Chris Gable and John Gallagher.

Wrestling

Adam Waters was a repeat champion in the Pa. Youth State Tournament held recently in WilkesBarr­e.

Waters’ second title came in the 9-10 age group’s 95-pound category, where he went 5-0. The Pottsgrove School District resident claimed gold with a 4-2 decision of Bekhruz Sadriddino­v (Philadelph­ia).

Another local state champion was Owen Vietmeier (Upper Perkiomen), who went 4-0 in the 11-12 145-pound bracket. Vietmeier dominated Micah Kimbrough (Hopewell) in the final, posting a 15-2ma- jor decision.

Isaiah Wright (Daniel Boone) also distinguis­hed himself in the 11-12 division, placing third at 115 with a 7-1 run. Wright scored the bronze medal with a 6-1 decision of Sean Kinney (East Stroudsbur­g).

In the same division, Tucker Hogan (Daniel Boone) finished fifth off an 8-0 victory over Mark McGonigal (Clearfield).

Jack Consiglio (Methacton), Mason Richards (Pottsgrove) and Alan Alexander (Pottsgrove) all scored fourth-placemedal­s— Consiglio at 11-12 (65), Richards at 8U (65) and Alexander at 11-12 (145). All three went 4-2 in the tournament.

Tucker Hogan (Daniel Boone, 11-12, 115) and Owen Koch (Phoenixvil­le, 11-12, 125) placed sixth while Nathan Rickards (Owen J. Roberts, 11-12, 75) finished seventh.

Other area youths who qualified for the tournament were Brody Inman (Daniel Boone, 8U, 90), Dean Bechtold (Owen J. Roberts, 9-10, 90), Douglas Keck (Owen J. Roberts, 9-10, 150), Cole Euker (Perkiomen Valley, 9-10, 120), Owen Brunner (Upper Perkiomen, 8-U, 55) and Nathan Reinhart (Upper Perkiomen, 1112, 145).

Gymnastics

Three gymnasts from the Berks East Level 8 Optional team, Hannah Rybacki, Carlie Lewis and Gianna Campisi, competed at Level 8 Regionals hosted by Xcel Gymnastics this past weekend, April 1st and 2nd in Monaca, PA. Level 8 Regionals is the pinnacle of the competitio­n season for the Level 8 gymnasts who qualified through their state championsh­ips to compete against gymnasts from our region (DE, MD, NJ, PA, VA, WV). Individual Results:

Hannah Rybacki placed third on vault.

The gymnasts fromeach respective state also competed as a team for their state. A team award was given for each age group in every state represente­d.

Hannah Rybacki placed second in Pennsylvan­ia on vault helping her team place first overall.

Carlie Lewis placed third in Pennsylvan­ia on floor helping her team place second overall.

The Berks East Gymnastics Level 7 team competed in the 2017 Pennsylvan­ia Level 7 State Championsh­ip meet hosted by Centre Elite Gymnastics in Wingate, PA the weekend of March 25th and 26th. Individual Results:

Sarah Pastor placed fourth on vault.

Hailee Oswald placed sixth All-Around (AA), fourth on beam; Lilly Turnquist placed third on floor.

Reilly Spinrad placed fifth on floor. Senior E: Jenna Duczkowski placed fourth on floor.

Lauryn Moddrel is the PA All-Around State Champion as well as beam and floor state champion, placed second on vault, sixth on bars.

Silvia’s Gymnastics Level 7 gymnasts competed in the 2017 Pennsylvan­ia Level 7 State Championsh­ips, hosted by Centre Elite Gymnastics Inc. Individual results:

Claire Richards placed second on beam.

Lily Smith is the State Champion on bars and AA, and placed third on beam and floor; Brook Ahart is State Champion on beam.

Carmella Calafati placed third on vault; Morgan Kachmar placed second on beam.

Crew

This past weekend was the first official race for the Owen J. Roberts Rowing Club.

The team started their morning off with the Womens 2x where Hannah Tobinus and Lauren Edleman placed second in the final. The Mens 2x, including Ethan Sager and Colin Hansen, also placed second in their final. The Mens 4x finished second with Adam Brown in the stroke seatwith Joe Garvey, Jack Vallino and Tyler Hansen in Bow.

The Womens Novice 4+ came away with first place in their first race. The boat had Sophia Ferrizzi in stroke seat followed by Sequoia Gayer, Shivani Praveen, Maddie Dalton and LiamGallow­ay was the Coxswain. The Womens JV 4+ also finished first with EmilyHughe­s in stroke seat followed by Marissa Venezia, Maddie Braun, Kat Sherwood and their Coxswain was Gabi Shrader.

The Mens JV 4+ had a fifth place win with Jack Vallino in stroke seat followed Joe Garvey, Max Vallino, Liam Galloway and Camryn Rogers as the Coxswain. The last race of the day was the Mens Varsity 4+ Final which ended in a fourth place finish with Colin Hansen in stroke seat followed by Jack O’Donnell, Ryan Kelly, Ethan Sager and Coxswain was Emily Hughes.

Head Coach Emily Coldren was very pleased with the results of the day and said she is looking forward to a great season this Spring. “The rowers have been very focused and eager to get out there and race.”

The team is loading up again to face off against other crews this coming weekend at the Steve Neczypor Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden.

Half-Marathon

A 51-year-old Pottstown native captured first place in theMen’s GrandMaste­rs at the Garden Spot Village Half-Marathon on Saturday, April 8.

James Krupa captured the Men’s Grand Masters (age 50 or above) division crown with a time of 1:37:42, 25 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Mike Bizal (1:38:07) from Exton.

The event attracted some 1,200 marathoner­s and half marathoner­s from 29 states and as far as Ukraine. Beginning and ending on the community’s 104-acre campus, theUSATrac­k and Field (USATF)-certified course runs along rural roads through Lancaster County. The Garden Spot Village Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
