Dowd sets Youngstown St. HR record

Sarah Dowd isn’t having her best season at the plate for the Youngstown State softball team but the senior got her name in the record book in an 11-3 Horizon League loss to Northern Kentucky last Thursday in Highland Heights, Ky.

Dowd, a senior fromPottst­own (Owen J. Roberts), hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning of the game. It was her sixth of the season. It was also the 35th homer of her career and it broke the school record that stood for nine years.

The 5-foot-4 righthande­d-hitting outfielder hit seven homers as a freshman and 11 both as a sophomore and junior.

“Sarah has been a major reason for the success we have had during her career here,” coach Brian Campbell said. “She has worked tremendous­ly hard and breaking the home run record which stood for so long is a testament to her work ethic. We could not bemore proud of Sarah for accomplish­ing this great feat.”

The Penguins were 3021 last season but currently stand 17-24 overall and 5-7 in league play. Dowd is having a rare down year at the plate, hitting just .179 (20for-112) with five doubles and a triple to go along with the homers with 19 runs scored and 22 RBIs. She hit .305 with 35 RBIs last year and .329 with 33 RBIs as a sophomore and has 109 career runs batted in.

The junior was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week (April 10) for her play with the Kutztown softball team. The 5-foot-9 outfielder hit .533 (8-for15) highlighte­d by a 7-for8, four-RBI performanc­e in a doublehead­er sweep of Millersvil­le on April 8. On April 5, Tareila had the game-tying RBI single in the seventh inning against East Stroudsbur­g, the Golden Bears winning in 10 innings. Tareila leads the teamandthe PSACwith a .443 average. She has 43 hits on 97 at-bats with 12 doubles, two home runs, 17 runs scored and 21 RBIs. Kutztown is 23-8 overall and 6-0 in league play after a non-league doublehead­er sweep of University of Sciences on April 11.

The sophomore was named Middle Atlantic Conference Field Athlete of theWeek on April 11 and ECAC Field Athlete of the Week on April 13 after setting a Alvernia record and finishing first in the triple jump at the Messiah Invitation­al and Multi on April 8 in Grantham. His effort of 46 feet, 4¾ inches currently stands second on the MAC performanc­e list. He’s sixth on the MAC long jump list after finishing second in 20 feet, 5¾ inches at the Crusader Invitation­al on April 1 in Reading.

The sophomore is starting on defense for the Moravian women’s lacrosse team. She’s third on the squad with 26 ground balls and fourth in caused turnovers with 15. LaCava had four ground balls andthree caused turnovers and committed just one turnover as the Greyhounds dropped a 20-9 Landmark Conference decision to Scranton on April 8 that dropped the team’s record to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior is moving up in the Kutztown men’s track record book after a solid effort in a tri-meet against Bloomsburg and East Stroudsbur­g on April 1 in East Stroudsbur­g. Lindsay captured the 100-meter dash in 10.76 and is now seventh on the Golden Bears’ record list. He also captured the 200-meter dash in 21.87 which places him tied for 10th on the list. Kutztown finished second to East Stroudsbur­g (153.5142) with Bloomsburg third with 52.5 points. The senior third baseman earned three hon- ors for her play with the Alvernia softball team (April 2-8). She was named ECAC Player of the Week, Fastpitch News Player of the Week and MAC Commonweal­th Player of the Week. She led the Crusaders to a 4-0 week, hitting .800 (8for-10) with five doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and eight runs scored. On the season, DePriest is hitting .425 (31-for-73) with a triple. She leads the teamin home runs (four), RBIs (16) and runs scored (21), the Crusaders 15-11 overall and 3-7 in league play after splitting a league doublehead­er with Arcadia on April 14.

The 5-foot-1 freshman midfielder has started all 14 games for the Neumann women’s lacrosse team, the Knights 6-8 overall and 5-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference after a 1312 league victory over Immaculata on April 13 in Aston. Petrucelli has six goals and an assist for seven points and has 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers. She scored the first goal of her collegiate career in a 19-9 victory over Notre Dame (Md.) on March 29 and had two goals in a 15-1 triumph over Rosemont on April 1.

The junior midfielder has played in all 12 games with five starts for the East Stroudsbur­g women’s lacrosse team. She has scored nine goals with five assists for 14 points. And, she’s doing the job in the field with 20 ground balls, 26 draw controls and 10 caused turnovers. TheWarrior­s are 10-2 overall and 6-2 in PSAC after a 14-12 triumph over Shippensbu­rg on April 12. Stratten had a big game with a goal, two as- sists, six ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

The 5-foot-3 sophomore has started all 13 games in goal for the Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham women’s lacrosse team which is 10-3 overall and 3-0 in MAC Freedom play after a 15-6 league victory over Eastern on April 12 in St. Davids. She played just 42.13 minutes and gave up four goals with four saves in that game. On the season, Nemeth has given up 66 goals and has 82 saves. She’s given up just 13 goals in the Devils last five games.

The sophomore is a key performer for the Gwynedd Mercymen’s tennis teamin its bid to earn a spot in the upcoming Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament. Reimel helped the Griffins top Marywood 9-0 in a league match on April 13 in Gwynedd Valley. He took his No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-0 and teamed with sophomore Brian Irwin of Coatesvill­e to take No. 1 doubles 8-2. Reimel is 3-3 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles and 3-2 at No. 1 doubles.

The freshman attack has played in all 11 games with three starts for the Montclair State women’s lacrosse team. She had three assists in her first collegiate game, a 15-4 victory over Drew on Feb. 21, and scored her first goal in a 10-9 victory over McDaniel onMarch 15. Graver had her best offensive game of the season in a 10-7 victory over Rensselaer Poly on March 9 with three goals and an assist. The River Hawks are 7-4 after a 13-9 loss to Muhlenberg on April 11 in Allentown.
