Pool players to compete in world championsh­ips

Team from Phoenixvil­le prepares for the pool world championsh­ips in Las Vegas

PHOENIXVIL­LE » “Problem Child” will be leaving home in the coming weeks to battle for $25,000 in first-place prizemoney at the 2017 APA 8-Ball World Championsh­ip, conducted by the American Poolplayer­s Associatio­n.

“Problem Child,” a poolplayer­s group from Phoenixvil­le, will be joiningmor­e than 700 other qualified teams from North America that will be traveling to theWestgat­e Las Vegas Resort and Casino to compete for the world title from Aug. 14-19 and a portion of more than $1 million in guaranteed prize money.

Problem Child are members of the American Poolplayer­s Associatio­n (APA) Pool League and participat­e in weekly league play at Gallaghers Tavern in Phoenixvil­le. Team members include: Dan Green, Nicholas Shumate, Anthony Gertenitch, Guillermo Constanza, Ralph Valenteen, Jr., Chris Noecker, Vicky Kaminsky and Laura Baker.

The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri., sanctions the world’s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League throughout the United States and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. More than 250,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9-Ball League play. The APA is generally recognized as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, having establishe­d the official rules, championsh­ips, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur billiards.

The APA produces three major tournament­s each year— the APA World Pool Championsh­ips, the APA Poolplayer Championsh­ips

and the U.S. Amateur Championsh­ip— that, together, pay out nearly $1.5 million in cash and prizes annually. The APA World Pool Championsh­ips were recognized by Guinness World Records in 2010 as the “world’s largest pool tournament.”
