Spring City Jr. Legion wins regional title

The Spring City Junior Legion baseball team claimed the Berwick Regional title on Wednesday, claiming a pair of wins over the Boyertown Bear-Cubs on the day.

The Red Sox opened up with a 5-2 win, scoring all five of their runs in the top of the second to push a second game. In the title bout, Matthew Collons drove in Evan Bruder during the bottom of the second inning for the lone run as Spring City outlasted the Bear-Cubs 1-0.

With that, Spring City advances to the Pa. State Tournament.

Bruder notched a single in the second before coming around to score on Collons’ single a few batters later.

Zachary Male pitched a complete-game three-hitter to pick up the win. He walked one and struck out three to outlast BearCubs’ starter Kyle Jackson and the Bear Cubs.

Jackson was similarly dominant, pitching five complete innings where he was tagged for one run on five hits and two walks. He struck out three before turning it over to Gavin Henderson.

Avery Lee pitched five innings in the opener, limiting Boyertown to a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. He was tagged with six hits and a walk while

striking out two. Matthew Collons closed it out, holding the BearCubs hitless over the final two frames.

Zack Skrocki headed Spring City’s offense with three hits and an RBI while Collons had a hit, a run scored and an RBI out of the leadoff spot.

Broc Babb had two hits and an RBI for Boyertown, which racked up six hits. Tre Diguglielm­o was strong in relief, limiting the Red Sox to three hits over the final 5-2/3 innings.
