Phoenix Fiction Writers: Adult writers of fiction invited to attend twice monthly meetings of the Phoenix Fiction Writers at the library. Free. Led by Eric Parmer, offering local writers education, empowerment and constructive criticism. Michener, Esq. of Rick Linn, LLC offers this Phoenixville Legal Outreach Clinic, providing information, counseling, and advocacy in various areas of law, including family law, trusts & estates, criminal defense, landlord-tenant law, and legal issues facing small businesses. Attendees receive a free 20-minute consultation with an attorney, who will provide counseling and access to legal resources as needed. Consultations are provided on a first-come, first served basis. Red Rovers Presentation: Does your New Year’s resolution have something to do with getting up, out and moving? The Chester County Red Rovers can help. Phoenixville Public Library will host a free informational session on the Red Rovers Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 7p.m. Jeanne Clancy from the Chester County Library will be the presenter. The Red Rovers is a chapter of the American Volkssport Association (AVA): America’s Walking Club. Volkssport is an international sports program that promotes personal physical fitness and good health by providing fun-filled, safe exercise in a stress-free environment through self-paced walks and hikes. The walks are social events that permit walkers to explore different towns and parks on pre-planned routes. Learn how the Red Rovers can help you get started on the trail to “fun, fitness and friendship.” This event is free and open to the public. The Red Cross and You: Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “The Red Cross and YOU!,” Thursday, Jan. 4at 7p.m. Ned Bloom, senior volunteer specialist with the American Red Cross, Eastern Pennsylvania Region, will be the speaker. This presentation introduces the American Red Cross’s history, services (nationally and here in Eastern Pennsylvania) and what people need to do now to be prepared in the event of an emergency at home. Also discussed will be their free smoke alarm installation program (available to all homeowners), volunteer opportunities and more. This event is free and open to the public. Model Railroad Open House: The Schuylkill Valley Model Railroad Club will hold its annual Model Railroad Open House Saturdays and Sundays, Jan. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20and 21, from 1to 5 p.m. at 400S. Main St., Phoenixville. See and hear freight and passenger trains pulled by steam or diesel engines over 700feet of track. Admission is free. Donations are accepted. Montgomery County 4-H Junior Toastmasters Course: Montgomery County 4-H will partner with the Blue Bell chapter of Toastmasters International to offer a nine-week public speaking short course for teens ages 14to 18on Saturdays from Jan. 6to March 3from 10 to 11:30a.m. at the Montgomery County 4-H Center, 1015Bridge Road, Collegeville. Participants will work on being more comfortable speaking in front of a group, correct body language, elimination of filler words, writing a great speech, constructive criticism to help each other, how to run a meeting, interview skills and much more. The final meeting is graduation day, when participants will present to their family and friends and will demonstrate the skills they learned. A Night for the Lukens Family: A Night for the Lukens Family fundraiser will take place Jan. 20from 5to 9p.m. at Valley Forge Casino The fundraiser will aim to raise $200,000for the family in the wake of a tragic fire that took the lives of two young boys. All money raised through ticket sales, sponsorships and raffles will go directly to the family. The Montgomery County Hero Fund, Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office “Wheels of Justice” team, Irish Pub Children’s Foundation and the A-Team are all organizers of the fundraiser. January’s event will include food from area restaurants, drinks and performances by Wildflower and Showtime DJ Mike Valyo. Multiple gift baskets will also be raffled off. Special guest appearances are being finalized and will be announced at a later date. Tickets are $30for police, firefighters, military and EMS and $50for the general public. A reserved table of 10is $450. Tickets can be purchased online at montgomerycountyherofund.com. Donations of items for raffle baskets are also being sought.
