Teen Writing Group: Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. For students ages 12 to 18 by students ages 12 to 18. Drop in; no registration required. Students are welcome at this after-school writing group. The group will gather to share creative writing tips, respond to writing exercises and prompts and just show up to write. Bring something you’ve already begun and want to finish or get started on a new writing project. No previous writing experience is necessary; all writing genres and styles are welcome. Phoenix Fiction Writers: Adult writers of fiction invited to attend twice monthly meetings of the Phoenix Fiction Writers at the library. Free. Group meets second Thursday and third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the library’s Harrop Room. Led by Eric Parmer, offering local writers education, empowerment and constructive criticism. Writers ask questions about the writing process, read work out loud and receive/offer input on material read. Free and open to public. Legal Outreach Clinic: A free legal clinic will be offered at Phoenixville Public Library on the first Thursday of the month from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Ian J. Michener, Esq. of Rick Linn, LLC offers this Phoenixville Legal Outreach Clinic, providing information, counseling, and advocacy in various areas of law, including family law, trusts & estates, criminal defense, landlord-tenant law, and legal issues facing small businesses. Attendees receive a free 20-minute consultation with an attorney, who will provide counseling and access to legal resources as needed. Consultations are provided on a first-come, first served basis. ESL Conversation Group: An ESL Conversation Group meets each Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Phoenixville Public Library. The Great Lady Songwriters: Singer, keyboardist and lecturer Fred Miller will return Tuesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. for another lecture-in-song, “The Great Lady Songwriters.” If women did not dominate American songwriting, their presence is undeniable. This tuneful Lecture-in-Song pays tribute to those female composers and lyricists who played a significant part in Tin Pan Alley’s colorful history. Eight ladies are profiled, representing a broad range of eras and styles, beginning with Edwardian sentimentalist Beth Slater Whitson and ending with ultra-cool singing/ songwriting legend Peggy Lee. Skin Cancer Prevention: Phoenixville Public Library will host a free Skin Cancer Prevention workshop Thursday, May 31, at 7 p.m. Lindsay Smith, MPH, public health educator with the Chester County Health Department, will be the presenter. Understand skin cancer prevention and detection. Learn which sunscreen is best for you, how to find a dermatologist and how to check for skin cancer. Participants will have the opportunity to view their face and neck in the Health Department’s DermaScan in order to see sun damage from previous exposure. This event is free and open to the public. Volunteer Recruitment Month: During the month of May, Phoenixville Public Library will host representatives from several area nonprofit organizations that are recruiting volunteers. Participating organizations include Chester County Food Bank, Open Door Ministry, Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County, Bon Homie Better Days Foundation, Compassionate Care Hospice, Coatesville VA Voluntary Service, Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care and Compeer Chester County. Microsoft Office & More Classes: Learn Microsoft Office programs, QuickBooks, website design, and more in a series of classes to be held on at the Phoenixville Public Library. IT professional Ernie Tidball is the instructor. Class time is 10 a.m. to noon unless otherwise noted. The class schedule is as follows: Excel Advanced (June 2); Cyber Security (June 2 from 1 to 3 p.m.); QuickBooks Overview (June 16); Website Design with HTML (June 23); Website Design with JavaScript (June 30). Basic knowledge of computers and the ability to use a keyboard and mouse are required. Students should bring a USB drive if they wish to save their work and may bring their own laptops with Microsoft Office 2013 installed for the Excel and Publisher classes. Green Up Your Clean Up with Essential Oils: Phoenixville Public Library will host the hands-on workshop Green Up Your Clean Up with Essential Oils Tuesday, June 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. Natural health educator Megan Koppel will be the presenter. According to the website EWG.org, the average household has about 62 different toxic chemicals in it and we’re exposed to them frequently. Join this fun and interactive workshop where you will learn to DIY all of the most commonly used cleaning products in your home in minutes and for a fraction of the price of store-bought bottles. In the workshop, you will be guided to make your own cleaner to take home and start using right away. Cost is $5, payable at the door. Unlocking the Secrets to Your Dreams: Phoenixville Public Library will host a free workshop, “Unlocking the Secrets to Your Dreams,” Thursday, June 7, at 7 p.m. Dream specialist Ken Kaplan will be the presenter. Are you aware that your subconscious dreaming mind is literally a genius within you? More precise than an atomic clock, built to support your growth in the waking life, it is utterly devoted to you. Accurate beyond measure in revealing the depths of the interior of your emotional and psychological life and able to connect to the highest spiritual realms including visitations from departed loved ones, the dreaming mind is an extraordinary tool for self awareness, untangling unresolved conflict and gaining amazing clarity as to what is going on within. This presentation will go over how dreams work, then there will be time to experientially engage members of the audience directly and spontaneously with some dreams (or parts of dreams) brought forth to demonstrate the principles shared. Folk Musician Ivan Stiles in Concert: Championship-winning folk musician Ivan Stiles will perform in concert at Phoenixville Public Library Monday, June 11, at 7 p.m. A member of the Autoharp Hall of Fame, Stiles brings his audiences a unique blend of traditional to contemporary music in the folk tradition. At the competition level, Stiles won the 2006 Mountain Laurel Autoharp Championship, the 1991 International Autoharp Championship and the 1987 World Autoharp Championship. Beaded Jewelry Making Class: Phoenixville Public Library will host a beaded jewelry making class Tuesday, June 12, at 7 p.m. Geraldine Guzman is the craft instructor. AARP Smart Driver Two-Day Course: Phoenixville Public Library will host the AARP Smart Driver two-day course Thursday and Friday, June 14 and 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days. The AARP Smart Driver course offers an important opportunity to learn how to drive more efficiently and safely. Learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. Also learn how to manage and accommodate common agerelated changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course, so consult your insurance agent for details. AARP membership is not required to take the course, and there are no tests to pass. Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members (check or money order only, payable to AARP Smart Driver). Montgomery County Bookmobile: The Montgomery County Bookmobile will make the following stops: May 29 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Upper Providence Recreation Center, 499 Hopwood Road, Upper Providence. Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area Presentation: The Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area will hold a special presentation Friday, June 1, at 7: p.m. at its headquarters, 204 Church St., Phoenixville. Dr. Louis Beccaria, president and C.E.O. of the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation, will discuss the importance of philanthropy and volunteerism to communities. He will discuss and draw from his experiences in working with charitable and nonprofit organizations and will share anecdotes from his book, “My Journey in Philanthropy.” The event is free and open to the public. Attendees can also enjoy the historical society’s current exhibit, “The Greater Good: A History of Community Organizations Giving Back in Phoenixville”.
Operation Kidsafe Safety Event: Operation Kidsafe will hold a free child safety event Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Videon Chevrolet, 600 Nutt Road, Phoenixville. Join special guests NFL Super Star Jason Kelce and the Phillie Phanatic for a day of fun and safety. Operation Kidsafe is free and private for families. Parents take home the only record of the visit, a bio document that is ready to hand to law enforcement in an emergency. Safety tips to start a family safety action plan also will be included.
Kimberty Park Party: East Pikeland Township will host Kimberton Park Party Saturday, June 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Kimberton Park, 2202 Kimberton Road, Phoenixville. This event will celebrate Kimberton Park’s 20th birthday and will also feature a ribbon-cutting for the amphitheater. Activities will include Elmwood Park Zoo on Wheels from 1 to 3 p.m., amphitheater ribbon-cutting and performances by the Springer Studio at 2:30 p.m., raffle baskets, piñatas, inflatable obstacle course, toddler bounce house, crafts, games and food. Civil War Re-enactment: Pennypacker Mills will present re-enactors, living history demonstrators, sutlers (merchants) and exhibitors who bring the era of the American Civil War to life Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mansion tours and special exhibits will be offered throughout the weekend. The Civil War Event will include civilian street fashions, hair jewelry making, quilting, campfire cooking, tours of a United Sates Sanitation Commission tent and hands-on laundry, done the old fashioned way. A highlight of the weekend is the “Be a Soldier Kid Enlistment” activity. Children line up early to “enlist” as a private in the Union Army under the auspices of the PA 71st and 69th PA Irish Volunteers. After the Oath of Allegiance, soldiers are taught how to march and drill with wooden guns.Ther will be a battle each afternoon as the Union and Confederate forces, backed up by artillery, fight on the grounds. On Saturday, stop by the classroom as historian Paula Gidjunis offers a presentation on women in the Civil War. On Sunday, join Matthew Dodd as he shares songs and stories of the Civil War. The Civil War Event is a rain-or-shine event. Pets are not permitted at this event. Parking and admission are free, with a suggested $2 per person donation. A food vendor will be on site. Snakes Alive: Come to Upper Schuylkill Valley Park Saturday, June 9, at 11 a.m. to learn fun and interesting facts about snakes. There will be a live animal presentation given to hopefully dispel some of the myths about this much feared and misunderstood animal. Visitors will be able to touch a snake skin, as well as view one up close through a microscope. Snake-themed activities will be included. This program is for all ages. There is a $2 per person suggested donation. This event will be held weather-permitting, as all of the activities will be held outdoors.
