Suspect in Phoenixville murder waives hearing
PHOENIXVILLE » One of two suspects accused of taking part in the slaying of a 15-year-old in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot last December is expected to face a trial for the killing.
Robert McCoy III, 23, of Pottstown, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday on charges related to the Dec. 27, 2017, murder of 15-year-old Jayson Ortiz-Cameron. Charges against McCoy include second-degree murder, criminal homicide, robbery, criminal conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property.
According to court documents, Chester County Detectives and Phoenixville Police launched an investigation after it was reported that one person had been shot at approximately
7:30 p.m. outside Dunkin Donuts, 218 Nutt Road, on Dec. 27. Upon arrival, police found the victim, Ortiz-Cameron, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead before arriving at the hospital.
Police conducted witness interviews and reviewed crime scene evidence, cell phone records and video surveillance following the incident. Through an investigation, police learned that Ortiz-Cameron and one other victim agreed to meet with individuals they later identified as McCoy and Brian Corsey, 25, of Philadelphia to arrange a drug deal.
At one point during the meet up, the victim said, Ortiz-Cameron went to speak with Corsey and McCoy allegedly grabbed the second victim and told him, “You don’t want to go over there.”
At that time, the victim said he saw Corsey pull out a small semiautomatic handgun. He then heard a shot and saw Ortiz-Cam-
eron fall to the ground, according to court documents. Both men then got back into the vehicle and fled the parking lot toward Milligan Street, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Court documents state that additional witnesses corroborated that McCoy had been looking for a connection to purchase marijuana in the days leading up to the homicide. Police said video surveillance from the scene also corroborates witness statements about the incident and that video shows what appears to be a black Ford sedan with distinctive wheels and a rear spoiler leaving the scene.
On Jan. 1 Pottstown Police located a vehicle matching that description on Warren and King streets. Investigators found a 2007 black fourdoor Ford Focus with a registration plate removed. Police say the vehicle had identical wheels to those seen in surveillance video from Dunkin Donuts as well as a dark plastic covering on the rear passenger side window. The vehicle also had a stock spoiler on the trunk lid, police said. Police say the vehicle was registered to Corsey.
McCoy is scheduled for a formal arraignment on June 28 and Corsey is awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 27.
